Review: Alone of All Her Sex

Avis de journaliste - Kirkus Reviews

Marina Warner started this study of the cult of the Virgin from the question ""What was it I had worshipped"" in her convent school childhood? No more than pointing to the fact that references to the mother of Jesus in the New Testament are few and contradictory, the author looks in depth at aspects of the Virgin as object of devotion (bride, intercessor, queen, etc). She uses art, verse--some fresh and charming medieval pieces--social history, and the history of ideas to show how the personality of the myth has varied and what this has meant in Western history. Although apparently neither biblical scholar nor anthropologist, Warner is in touch with the latest trends and in matters of art, speaks from first-hand acquaintance. Her basic criticism eventually surfaces and is spelled out in an epilogue--""assumptions about role satisfaction, sexual differences, beauty and goodness are wonderfully compressed in this one icon ... But [while] Mary establishes the child as the destiny of woman, [she] escapes the sexual intercourse necessary for all other women ... the Virgin Mary is not the innate archetype of female nature; she is the instrument of a dynamic argument from the Catholic Church about the structure of society""-- a proposition which Jungians and others can argue about. The non-Catholic may feel he or she could be reading about the Tobriand Islanders, and for all the author's tart comment on Roman folly (or because of it), this fine piece of cultural history will be best appreciated within the larger Catholic world both of assent and dissent.

A well researched book that is both fascinating and informative. However, I feel that it could be quite a difficult book for the average reader. Consulter l'avis complet

Shows how the figure of Mary has shaped and been shaped by changing social and historical circumstances and why for all their beauty and power, the legends of Mary have condemned real women to perpetual inferiority. Consulter l'avis complet

Marina Warner closely examines the history and influence of the idea of the Virgin Mary. This is not a biography. Instead, Warner looks at how society has viewed and even used the Virgin. Warner ... Consulter l'avis complet
