Banjo

Couverture
X Press, 2000 - 240 pages
Although Claude Mackay is probably best known for the novel Banana Bottom, many rate this European set work as its equal. Centred around a group of beached black American and Caribbean sailors adrift in that fleshpot of commerce and racism, Marseilles, it presents an extraordinarily vivid picture of the lives of these hapless sailors as they live by their wits waiting for their ship to come in. At times comic, and at times tragic, Banjo is at all times great fiction and deservedly a classic of black writing.
