The present volume contains the procectings of a conference of Writing and the Mystical Experience in the Religions of the Book" held at the Sorbonne in 1994. Though this theme is examined within the Christian and Islamic traditions, most of the contributions touch on this phenomenon in Jewish mysticism in the various stages of its historical development from the Midrash an d Merkabah right down to Luryanis Qabbalah and appear a lang site. Theoretical and methodoligical essays phenomenological studies of particular rituals connected with the mystical experience both in the Jewish and non-Jewish context. Of particular significance are the articles dealing with comparative aspects between Christian, Jewish and Muslim rituals such as baptism or the visitation of tombs."

Paul B. Fenton, Ph.D. (1975) in Oriental Studies, University of Sorbonne, is Professor of Hebrew and Jewish Studies at the University of Paris IV-Sorbonne. He has published extensively in the area of Jewish philosophy and mysticism in the Islamic context including his "Philosophie et exegese dans le Jardin de la metaphore" (Brill, 1987). Roland Goetschel is Emeritus Professeur of Hebrew Language and Civilisation at the University of Paris-Sorbonne and Adjunct Professor at the Free University of Brussels. He is a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts in Salzburg. His many publications on medieval Jewish philosophy and the Kabbalah include: "Meir ibn Gabaay, Le Discours de la kabbale Espagnole" (1981), "Isaac Abravanel, Conseiller des Princes et Philosophe" (1996) and "La Kabbale" (1998).
