Theories thus advanced will have to be tested more rigorously by fresh evidence as it is acquired, phases of development will need to be traced in greater detail, the rich comparative literature of other lands will have to be utilized more fully. Contents: introductory influences, linguistic, romantic and realistic; scripture and allegory; heavenly host; fiction and instruction in the sermon Exempla; preachings of satire and complaint; sermon and drama; literary echo of the social gospel.
