Writer and expert on children's literature, Dorothy Butler was born in New Zealand in 1925. She owns the Dorothy Butler Children's Bookshop in Auckland, New Zealand. Babies Need Books: Sharing the Joy of Books with Children from Birth to Six, originally published in 1980, is considered a classic in its field. It contains summaries of hundreds of books for young children, broken down by age and topic.
