L'antisémitisme en France pendant les années trente: prélude à Vichy

Couverture
Editions Complexe, 1992 - 380 pages
Against the background of political life in France (among others, Léon Blum's government), discusses the growth of antisemitism in France in the 1930s, in part due to the economic crisis and political tensions in Europe. Describes antisemitism expressed in books, pamphlets, and articles in journals. The main themes of the antisemitic discourse were: a Jewish "invasion", the repulsive physique and morality of the Jews, the "destructive" Jewish spirit in culture and religion, and the idea of "Jewish power". Discusses, as well, various forms of philosemitic actions in defense of the Jews, emanating from various circles, both secular and Catholic. Concludes that the anti-Jewish legislation in France during the Second World War was the realization of ideas which were present in antisemitic circles in France in the 1930s.
