CHAPTER I.

Landing--Cassel by daylight, and Cassel by moonlight

- Belgian bipeds and quadrupeds.

Calais, June 27th, 1836. A few miles of water crossed, two hours gentle heaving upon a clear blue surface scarcely disturbed with a ripple,—and all is changed !

The difference between the two countries strikes forcibly the moment one catches a glimpse of the pier. Instead of the orderly, demure-looking English girl, with her close cottage bonnet and sober-coloured dress, there is the poissarde with her scarlet boddice and short blue petticoat, her cap flying back from VOL.
