THE AUTHOR'S PREFACE.

IN compliance with the desire of a great number of Professors, I publish now the Second Course of my "Easy Method of learning the French Language," hoping that it will not remain too far behind the expectations which have been entertained of it. In composing this volume, it has been one of my principal endeavours to make up for the deficiencies occurring in the First Course, and to offer at the same time abundant materials for practice. Everything which bears reference to life and social intercourse I have most carefully rendered in various forms,-in letters, dialogues, tales, conversations, etc.

There will be found nothing which is beyond the comprehension of youth, and nothing that could violate the respect which we owe to it. The master will find in this book matter enough for new exercises as well as for conversation, and will thus be enabled, in a short time, to impart to his pupils fluency and correctness of expression. I would have added a few grammatical rules, to serve as a sure guide, had I not been justified in supposing that the master himself will find, in using this book, ample opportunities of doing so, and will not fail to make use of them.

FR. AHN.
