SEPTEM CONTRA THEBAS.

Great doubts have been entertained, whether the title should be Ἑπτὰ ἐπὶ Θήβας οι Ἑπτὰ ἐπὶ Θήβαις. Dr B. remarks. "Nequeo tamen mihi temperare, quin meam quoque sententiam adjiciam, qui 'Extà ixi Onßas legentibus aliquid auctoritatis accedere putem, quod dixerit Euripides in Phoeniss. v. 77. 'Ex' αὐτὰ δ ̓ ἐλθὼν ἑπτάπυλα τείχη τάδε. ” A similar remark had been made by Markland with respect to v. 1221. of the Supplices of Euripides. Dr B. thinks the question trifling; but it is as well to settle even a trifling question, if it can be done without much waste of time or trouble. The matter stands thus. All the MSS. and editions prior to the Glasgow of 1784, have as. About fifteen ancient authors quote it ßas; and about four have enßais; but in two of these four Oßas is given as a various reading. Authorities therefore are in favour of the accusative case. Syntax admits either.

V. 4. Εἰ μὲν γὰρ εὖ πράξαιμεν, αἰτία θεῶν. We read θεοῦ, with all the best MSS. ν. 35. εὖ τελεῖ θεὸς. ν. 631. Θεοῦ δὲ δῶρόν ἐστιν εντυχεῖν βροτούς.

B. prefer? Euripides has borrowed this verse, Med. 523. and there is read; as it should always be in the Attic poets.

ν. 15. Ζύγοισι δουλίοισι, Stanl. δουλείοισι Pors. Which the present editor prefers we know not; but doing seems to be preferable, and door Zuyor, rather than duur, in vv. 477. 799. In v. 50. of the Persæ the metre requires doúnior-Cuyor. in v. 955. of the Agamemnon devλi-vy. in v. 595, of the Troades of Euripides ζυγὰ δούλια.

Ibid. μÁTOTE σxslav. "Nos quidem" says Dr B. "μù dors μήποτε σχεθεῖν. σχέθειν u cogitavimus." The context docs not admit of this conjecture: Eteocles prays to the Gods-" do not extirpate this city, nor hold it in the yoke of slavery;" dirs would be nonsense. We are surprised that not one of the commentators should have been aware of the ellipsis of tuxum, which indeed is not of very frequent occurrence; but of which there are instances in v. 259. of this play, v. 304. of the Choephori, Euripid. Suppl. Mul. v. 3. Anonym. in Etymol. M. p. 346, 42. Suid. v. Εξάντη, "Ω Ζεύ, γενέσθαι τῆσδε μ' ἐξάντη νόσου. where Kuster remarks," desideratur verbum dòs, vel simile quid. Lest this authority should lead Dr B. to question our supposed ellipsis of süxual, we refer him to Aristophanes Ran. vv. 884. 5. 6. ed. Brunck.

v. 108. is thus arranged by Brunck. ἔπιδε πόλιν. "Qui senarius est" says Dr languidior ob tribrachyn in quinto loco." of an Athenian critic have revelled in a senarius, in which seven short syllables followed each other?

ν. 118. Καχλάζει πνοαίς. σε Πιοαῖς καγχλάζει Ald. " In our copy of the Aldine edition it stands Καγχλάζει πιοαῖς.

ν. 129. αρηίων όπλων. "Nos ag scripsimus, more Attico. " It is sufficiently clear, however, that the Attics wrote aguas, from the name of the celebrated council who sat in the "Aguos mayos. Eumen. 682. Πάγον δ' Αρειον τόνδ', ̓Αμαζόνων ἕδραν.

ν. 128. δορυσσόοις σαγαῖς. "Nos doguzios cum Hermanno ob metrum. In the Supplices v. 979. the metre requires the double σ. Ἐμοῦ δ ̓ ὀπαδοὺς τούσδε καὶ δορυσσόους Hesiod. Scut. 54. δορύσα σέρ ̓Αμφιτρύωνι. We should therefore prefer δορύσσοις σαγαῖς. 50 phocl. Oed. Col. 1313. Οἵους δορύσσους ̓Αμφιαρίως.

ν. 214. Τί οὖν; ὁ ναύτης ἆρά γ' εἰς πρώραν φυγών. The hiatus be tween the two first words is passed over in silence by Dr Butler, notwithstanding the following remark of Porson on v. 892. of the Phoenisse. "Sed neque hiatum Tragici admittunt post , (nam pauca, quæ adversantur, exempla mendosa sunt) neque &c. Notwithstanding also that Bentley and Dawes had declared (rather too generally) that the Attic poets altogether rejected the hiatus of vowels in Iambic and Trochaic verses, Dr Butler remarks on v. 710. (Τί οὖν ἔτ ̓ ἂν σαίνοιμεν ὀλέθριον μόρον ;) “Tío Cant. 1. sed vulgata satis se tuentur. Cf. v. 214. TỶ οὖν ὁ ναύτης, He might have adduced the corroborating testimonies of Markland on v. 109. of the Supplices of Euripides, and of Brunck v. 733. of the Philoctetes of Sophocles. But, as he remarks, the common reading sufficiently defends itself. We are, however, inclined to break a lance with it. In the Supplices of Eschylus v. 303. for Tí our revžen ärλo dvoxicus Bot; Mr Porson printed Tidur. from the correction of Heath. In v. 710. of the same play, for Ti or à dios Tógtis suxeres Boòs, we agree with Professor Monk on v. 975. of the Hippolytus, in receiving Stanley's correction, Tis our à dios %. Pers. 788. Tí our άναξ Δαρεῖς; Read Τί δ' ον. * In v. 710. of this play we had formerly conjectured, Τί γοῦν ἔτ ̓ ἂν σαίνοιμεν ὀλέθριον μόρον, as in v. 20. of the Supplices, Τίνα γοῦν χώραν εὔφρονα μᾶλλον Τῆςδ ̓ ἀφικοίμε ; but we are now inclined to believe that the Tragedians never used you, but, which is not the same thing. In the above verse we read Τίν ̓ ἂν οὖν χώραν, κ. τ. λ. (See our remarks on v. 1073. of this play. Agam. 1427. Frácu didaxteis öifè your sè σωφρονεῖν, read Γνώσει διδαχθείς, οψέ γ' οὖν, τὸ σωφρονεῖν, οι δ' οὖν. Euripid. Electr. 350. Τί φασίν, άνης ἔστι και λεύσσει φάος; Έστιν λόγῳ γοῦν· φασὶ δ ̓ οὐκ ἀπιστ ̓ ἐμοί. Read, Εστιν λόγῳ μὲν, οι Ἔστιν· λόγῳ οὖν. v. 508. of the same play, Ανόνηθ ̓. ὅμως γοῦν τοῦτό γ' οὐκ ἠνεσχά Read όμως δ ̓ οὖν. ν. 770. Τέθνηκε δίς σοι ταὔθ ̓, ὦ γοῦν βούλει, ya. Read, your Boux. See, however, Eumen. 258. Eurip. Orest. 771. θανών γοῦν ὧδε κάλλιον θανεῖ. 778. δάκρυα γοῦν γένοιτ' ἄν. In both these passages it appears to us that the sense requires gaze

γὰρ for γοῦν. In the verse of this play we conjecture Τίν ̓ οὖν ἔτ ̓ ἂν σαίνοιμεν ὀλέθριον μόρον ; as in v. 403. Κόσμον μὲν ἀνδρὸς οὔτιν ἂν τρέσαιμ' y. In Sophocl. Philoct. 733. 753. for Tir; we should evidently read Tir; as in the Antigone 997. Electr. 920. Euripid. Hecub. 1374. Hippol. 1175. Troad. 1050. Heraclid. 795. Aristophan. Acharn. 177. In the verse under consideration we should prefer, Tí d' ovv; or Tí μnv; as in Eumen. v. 203. The observation of Bentley and Dawes is only true when applied to the Tragedians. An instance of hiatus occurs in v. 1265. of the Agamemnon. Пara. olev To mug. but under particular circumstances. V. 992. of the Choephori at present stands thus, Τί σοι δοκεῖ; μύραινά γ' ἢ ἔχιδ ̓ ἔφυ; but read, pugaivá vnd", " 'xid pu; At this same verse Dr B. says 66 "Agit 'tis Ald. Rob. In our copies of those editions it is åga μ' is. Read ἆρα μή 'ς πρ. Φ.

v. 223. Muretus Var. L. v. 19. adopts a different punctuation of this and the following verse, unremarked by Dr B.

ν. 232. Εστι θεοῖς δέ τ' ἰσχὺς καθυπερτέρα. Dr B. agrees with us in preferring lexus, the reading of Aldus and Robortellus, though he does not seem to be aware of the objection to dere, which we stated in our notice of Dr Burney's Tentamen, No. XXXV. p. 175. We are, however, in some degree of doubt, whether the genuine reading be not, "Er braïs de y' isxus x. A similar combination of the particles and y occurs in Euripid. Suppl. 936. 940. Iph. A. 21. Ion. 368. (where however we would read 'Aλyúurai dì xỷ Tixoūra) Electr. 1146. 1224, (byà dé y’érexéλsvoá co. as it should be read) Danae 18. See below, v. 288.

ν. 234. Εκ χαλεπᾶς δύας. “ Kai xadiñãs Pors." and so it stands in the Aldine, Florentine and Basle editions of Marcellinus. Ibid. vñigo iuμáranie Marcellinus in Vita Thucyd." Dr B. took Schutz's word for this: the words in Marcellinus are ὑπέρ τε ὀμμάτων.

Ibid. « Primus vidit Hermannus κρημναμενῶν νεφελῶν genitivos esse plurales." This statement is slightly inaccurate in the first place not nenuvausvär, but grauiar, the penacute, is the genitive plural; and secondly, the three first editions of Marcellinus have κριμναμένων νεφελῶν. Dr B. says σε κρημναμένην νεφέλην Ald. Rob. Our copies have νεφέλαν.

ν. 236. Ανδρῶν τάδ' ἐστὶ, σφάγια και χρηστήρια Θεοῖσιν έρδειν. We should prefer 'Ardeay Toď istí. Toď sc. et vad in Codd. sæpe confunduntur. as Dr B. would observe.

ν. 238. καὶ μένειν εἴσω δόμων, σε ἔσω δόμων Mosq. 1. Brunck. Schutz. recte, quoniam 'ATTIxwTięws. The tragedians, in the first, third, and fifth feet, as we are inclined to think, prefer

red,

red, cæteris paribus, a spondee to an iambus, for the reason judiciously assigned by Horace; Tardior ut paullo graviorque veniret ad aures. Professor Porson, in his first edition of the Hecuba, preferred is to us, but he afterwards changed his opinion.

ν. 239. Δυσμενέων δ ̓ ὄχλον πύργος ἀποστέγει. imagine the true reading to be norriyo. Πύργον στέγειν εὔξασθε πολέμιον δόρυ.

T οὗτοι is right. or is never placed at the beginning of a sentence, unless it is followed by, or when some word is interposed between of and T. See Prometh. 268. Theb. 38. 201. Euripid. Phoeniss. 110. Alcest. 419. Suppl. 535. oüti yg xœrýusta 'HμśTOY KUTO, where or is connected with the preceding member of the sentence by the particle vág. Alcest. 718. Oűti жgòs nμãr wλer'. Barnes, Reiske and Musgrave concur in to. The most common position of out is after λ. In Aristoph. Plut. 64. for Οὗτοι μὰ τὴν Δήμητρα χαιρήσεις ἔτι, we read 'Αλλ' οὔτι μὰ τ. Δ. Compare v. 563. of the Acharneans as corrected by Dr Bentley, with Sophocl. Ed. T. 371. Philoct. 1299. Euripid. Orest. 1609. Med. 365. Hippol. 41.

ν. 252. Μη νῦν ἀκούουσ ̓ ἐμφανῶς ἄκου ̓ ἄγαν. Read Mή ww. It is a mistake to suppose that is necessarily short when it is an enclitic. Dr B. has not referred us to Ruhnken's Epist. Crit. I. p. 32. who illustrates this verse with his usual learning.

ν. 260. Αὐτὴ σὺ δουλοῖς καὶ μὲ καὶ πᾶσαν πόλιν. σε καμὲ καὶ σὲ καὶ Pors Schutz. 2-Conjicio totum versum legendum esse, Αὐτὴν σὺ δουλοῖς καμὶ καὶ πᾶσαν πόλιν. Mr Gaisford informs us, in his notes on Hephaestion p. 242. that the reading of Porson is also that of the Selden, or Arundel, MS. It is confirmed by Sophocl. Ed. Τ. 64. ἡ δ ̓ ἐμὴ ψυχὴ πόλιν τε καμὲ καὶ σ ̓ ὁμοῦ στένει. For our own parts, we should prefer Αὐτὴ σὲ δουλοῖς, καμὲ, καὶ πᾶσαν πόλιν. Euripid. Phoeniss. 447. Παῦσαι πόνων μὲ, καὶ σὲ, καὶ πᾶσαν πόλιν.
