This book is devoted to one of the essential functions of modern telecommunications systems: channel coding or error correction coding. Its main topic is iteratively decoded algebraic codes, convolutional codes and concatenated codes.

Claude Berrou of the Institut Telecom is a Professor at Telecom Bretagne. In collaboration with Alain Glavieux, he introduced the concept of turbo codes and pioneered the extension of turbo-detection and turbo-equalization. He has received several distinctions, including the 2003 IEEE Richard W. Hamming medal and the 2005 Marconi Prize. He was elected a member of the French Academy of Sciences in 2007 and an IEEE Fellow in 2009.
