of their friend and their chief to remain in the posses- 1842 sion of the family of General Street, to whom they were indebted in his life-time for many actes of kindness, they wish to give to his widow Mis. Eliza M. Street one section of land to include the said graves, and the agency house and enclosures around and near it; and as the agency house was built at the expense of the United States, the Sacs and Foxes agree to pay them the sum of one thousand dollars the value of said building assessed by gentlemen appointed by them, and Governor Chambers commissioner on the part of the United States, to be deducted from the first annuity payable to them under the provisions of this treaty. And the United States agree to grant to the said Eliza M. Street by one or more patents, six hundred and forty acres of land in such legal subdivisions, as will include the said burial ground, and near it, in good convenient form, to be selected by the said E. M. Street or her duly authorized agent.

Art. IX. It is finally agreed that this treaty shall be binding on the two contracting parties, so soon as it shall have been ratified by the President and Senate of the United States Provided always. That should the Senate disagree to and reject, alter or amend any portion or stipulation thereof, the same must be again submitted to the Sacs and Foxes, and assented to by them, and if they disagree to such alteration or amendment, the treaty shall be returned to the Senate for ratification or rejection, in the form in which it was signed.

In wittness whereof, the said John Chambers, commissioner on the part of the United States and the undersigned chiefs, braves, and headmen of the Sac and Fox nation of Indians, have hereunto set their hands, at the Sac and Fox agency, in the Territory of Jowa, this eleventh day of October, Anno Domini one thousand eight hundred and forty two.

Now, therefore, be it known, that J. John Tyler, President of the United States of America, having seen and considered said treaty, do, in pursuance of the advice and consent of the Senate, as expressed in their resolution of the fifteenth of February, one thousand eight hundred and forty-three, accept, ratify, and confirm the same, and every article and clause thereof.

In testimony whereof J. have caused the seal of the United States to be hereunto affixed, having signed the same with my hand. Done at the city of Washington, the twenty-third day of March, one thousand eight hundred and forty-three, and of the Independence of the United States the sixty-seventh. JOHN TYLER.

Ordonnance royale donnée en France le 6 Novembre 1842, portant fixation du Tarif des droits à percevoir dans les chancelleries consulaires *).

Sur le rapport de notre ministre et secrétaire d'Etat au département des affaires étrangères.

Nous avons Ordonné et ordonnons ce qui suit:

Art. 1er A dater du 1er janvier 1843, les droits de chancellerie consulaires seront perçus conformément au tarif joint à la présente ordonnance, et selon la catégorie dans laquelle chaque pays est classé par l'article suivant.

2. Sont compris dans la première catégorie: les Etats d'Italie, l'Autriche, la Turquie, les Etats barbaresques et la Grèce.

Dans la seconde catégorie: l'Espagne, le Portugal, la Belgique, la Hollande, la Prusse, les Etats de la Confédération germanique, le Danemarck, la Suède, la Russie, Malte et les îles loniennes;

Dans la troisième catégorie: la Grande-Bretagne, ses possessions en Afrique, en Asie et en Amérique; Gibraltar, les Etats de l'Amérique septentrionale et méridionale, Haïti, les possessions espagnoles en Asie et en Amérique, et la Chine.

3. Les taxations des actes particuliers à certaines localités, et dont l'énonciation n'était pas susceptible d'être comprise dans la nomenclature du tarif général des chancelleries consulaires, seront soumises par nos consuls, sous forme de tarif annexe, à l'approbation de notre ministre et secrétaire d'Etat au département des affaires étrangères.

4. Le tarif des droits de chancellerie, ainsi que le tarif annexe, seront constamment affichés dans la chancellerie, conformément à l'article 1er de l'ordonnance du 23 août 1833.

5. Les droits de chancelleries consulaires pourront, en cas d'urgence, être modifiés par décisions de notre
