SECT. I. Perfeus prepares fecretly for a war against
the Romans. He endeavours a reconciliation with
the Achæans in vain. His fecret measures not un-
known at Rome. Eumenes arrives there, and in-
forms the fenate of them. Perfeus attempts to de-
ftroy that prince, firft by affaflination, and after-
wards by poifon. The Romans break with Per-
feus. Different fentiments and difpofitions of the
kings and ftates in regard to the Macedonian war.
After feveral embassies on both fides, the war is de-
clared in form,

SECT. II. The conful Licinius, and King Perteus,
take the field. They encamp near the river Pene-
us, at some distance from each other. Fight of the
horfe, in which Perfeus has confiderably the ad-
vantage, and makes an ill use of it. He endea-
vours to make peace, but ineffectually. The ar-
mies on both fides go into winter quarters,

SECT. III. The fenate pafs a wife decree to put a stop
to the avarice of the generals and magiftrates, who
oppreffed the allies. The conful Marcius, after fu-
ftaining great fatigues, enters Macedonia. Perfeus
takes the alarm, and leaves the paffes open: he re-
