DE LITTÉRATURE-FRANÇAISE COMPRENANT: 1o des notices biographiques et littéraires; 2° des œuvres ou PAR A. DE ROUGEMONT, A. M. auteur de "La France," etc. NEW YORK: WILLIAM R. JENKINS, ÉDITEUR ET LIBRAIRE FRANÇAIS, 851 & 853 SIXTH AVENUE. 387577 Copyright, 1893, by WILLIAM R. JENKINS, All Rights Reserved. CYTILORMIY PRINTED BY THE AVANT-PROPOS. R6 This is above all a working Manual or Handbook of French Literature. To give that special and certainly desirable character, the new plan has been adopted of combining: (a) sufficient information about the life and works of authors; (b) critical appreciations in the English point of view; (c) brief, yet full notes, on points requiring explanations, most of them suggested by actual experience in the class-room; (d) questions which may answer several purposes, such as testing the work of the students, bringing out the essential points of a writing, helping the memory and the right interpretation of the text. They may also serve for examinations and practice in the language. Full and characteristic extracts are given of each great writer; even, in three important cases, the principal parts of a whole work connected by short summaries of the parts left out, so as to preserve the continuity of the subject. This plan will no doubt make the work both of the students and teachers much easier, yet, at the same time more thorough and systematic. Moreover, it lends itself to as full developments of the subject-matter as the instructor will deem it necessary. 387597 |
