If this man, so weak and helpless, so readily
obeyed the Savior, should any one hesitate
immediately to do as he commands?

What does he command all men now to do?
Acts 17: 30.

Have you obeyed?

10 DID those who knew this poor man rejoice when they saw he was cured?

What did they say to him?

Will you repeat the passage in Ex. 20:8-10?
Who alone can heal diseases by a word?

Had not Jesus shown by this miracle, that he
possessed authority to command what he
pleased?

11 WHAT did the man who had been cured of his lameness say to the Jews?

Would you not think it safe to obey any one, who could, by a word, cure a man who had been sick thirty-eight years?

12 THEN What did they ask him?

Were these persons probably present at the pool, when the man was healed?

13 DID the man know who had healed him? What prevented it?

As there was a great multitude there, was it not easy for Jesus to pass out of sight among them ?

14 AFTERWARD, where did Jesus find this man? For what purpose might he have gone there? What feelings are appropriate when we have received great favors ?

Should you think the man was thankful to God
for the blessing he had received?
What did Jesus say to the man?

Was not his very long sickness a very great evil?
What can and will come upon all impenitent
sinners that is a thousand times worse? -
Matt. 25: 46.

Are you not exposed to this dreadful evil?
How can any escape? - Chap 3: 16.

15 AFTER this, did he know who it was that had healed him?

What did he do?

What might he expect the Jews would do, when informed that it was Jesus who had healed him?

Was this natural ?

Is it reasonable to expect you to love your parents? Why?

To expect all to love God? Why?

16 How did this affect the minds of the Jews? Would it not destroy the influence of Jesus, if

the rulers among them charged him with violating God's law; and with being a very wicked man?

What, beside persecuting Jesus in this way, did they seek to do?

For what reason?

Was this a good reason for their enmity? Why? 17 WHAT kind of work was it which Jesus did on the Sabbath?

What did Jesus say to the people?

Does not our heavenly Father provide for our comfort on Sabbath days?

What would happen to the beasts of the field,
or the fowls of the air, were it not for his
constant provision and blessing on all days?
What is said of the Sabbath, Mark 2: 27, 28 ?
Then might not Jesus, the Son of God, properly
bless this poor cripple with healing mercy on
the Sabbath day?

What is it lawful for us to do on Sabbath days?
Matt. 12: 12.

Is it doing well, to visit the sick, to teach the
ignorant the word of God, to hear the truth,
and study the Bible?

Have you been doing these things which are right, in a proper manner?

18 WHAT effect did this reply produce on the Jews? Why did they seek the more to kill him?

To whom did they say he made himself equal ?
What is said in Chap. 1 : 1 ?

Then, did he not possess equal power and au-
thority with God?

And was this not evident to all who saw his works?

LESSON XI.

Jesus declares his Equality with God.

CH. V. 1935.

19 T Then answered Jesus and said. unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.

20 For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.

21 For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.

22 For the Father judgeth no man, but bath committed all judgment unto

the Son:

23 That all men should honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He that honoreth not the Son, honoreth not the Father which hath sent him.

24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. 25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God and they that hear shall live. 26 For as the Father hath life in him.

self; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;

27 And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.

28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,

29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

30 I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just, because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.

31 If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.

32 There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true. 33 Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth.

34 But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved.

35 He was a burning and a shining light and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.

Or what miracle have we an account in the first part of this chapter?

On what day was it performed?
How long had this man been lame?

Were the Jews pleased with this exhibition of
his power and kindness?

Of what did they accuse him? - v. 18. 19 WHAT does he now say about his power? Does he yet call himself the Son of God? What are some things that Jesus did which the Father does?- Chap. 1: 3. Heb. 1: 3.

Will a good and obedient child do any thing of
himself, or for himself, opposed to his father's
will?

Was Jesus desirous of obeying the will of his
Father? Matt. 26: 42.

Can you tell the reason why he could do noth-
ing of, or for himself?

Does his Son Jesus see all that God does?
Can man see how God performs his works, as
Jesus can?

If a child knows all that you know, and is able
to do every thing which you can, is he not
equal to you in knowledge and power?

20 How does the Father feel toward his Son Jesus? What does he show him?

What will he hereafter show him?

Can you repeat some of the wonderful things which Jesus had already done?

21 WHAT does Jesus say the Father had done? Do you recollect any instance in which the power of God had been shown in raising the dead in old times?-1 Kings 17: 19-24. 2 Kings 4: 32-35.

Will you relate these occurrences in your own language?

Did these prophets raise those dead children to life by their own power, or did God do it by them?

Did Jesus raise the dead of himself?

What did he say in Chap. 10: 18, about his power to raise himself from the dead?

Then, was his power not different from that of the prophets?

[ocr errors]

22 WHAT did he say the Father did not do? To whom has he committed all judgment? Are not the raising of all the dead and judging the world much greater works than healing one sick man?

Should you think Jesus would be able to judge the world, if he did not know the hearts of all people?

According to what principle will men be judged? - Matt. 25: 34-46.

Does he know your heart?

Do you think if you should die as you now are, Jesus would condemn you at the day of judgment?

23 WHOм did Jesus say men should honor? To what extent ?

How may we honor God?

Do you know any persons who do not reverence, praise, and obey God?

If a person pretends to honor the Father, and
disregards and speaks lightly of his Son Jesus
Christ, will God accept him?

Can those who do not honor Jesus, honor God?
Why?

24 WHAT does Jesus say of such as hear, or attend to his instructions and believe on the Father? Into what shall they not come ?

In what state are all such as do not believe in
Jesus Christ? - Chap. 3: 18. Eph. 2:1.
From what are such passed, as believe and obey
the instructions of the Savior?

What young persons can you name, who, you
think, have passed into this happy state from
a state of condemnation ?
