ILLUMINATED MS.:

188 HORAE BEATAE MARIAE VIRGINIS, cum CALENDARIO; Illuminated Manuscript written in Lettres Bâtardes, on 200 pp. of THIN VELLUM, long lines, 12 only to a full-page, CALENDAR in red and blue, 1 full-page MINIATURE within gold architectural frame-work, the sides pillars being painted with representations of jewels, and 16 LARGE ALMOST FULL-PAGE MINIATURES WITH ARCHED TOPS, surrounded with BEAUTIFUL BORDERS; one p. of text with BORDERS ALL ROUND, and LARGE INITIAL 0, ALL OTHER PAGES HAVING BROAD OUTER MARGINS, CONSISTING OF CONVENTIONAL FLORAL SCROLLS, in the broad manner, interspersed with dainty representations of NATURAL FLOWERS and FRUITS: pomegranates, strawberries, pears, thistles, pansies, periwinkles, lilies, daisies, ragged-robins, bluebells, Passionflowers, cornflowers, colombines, speedwells, etc., and in a few cases ANIMAL GROTESQUES, also many hundred SMALL INITIAL LETTERS throughout; THE WHOLE MOST BEAUTIFULLY ILLUMINATED IN GOLD AND COLOURS, by a FRENCH ARTIST, of the middle of the Fifteenth Century, sq. post 8vo. old crimson morocco, of the early Seventeenth Century (back and joints repaired), tooled back, three-line border of gold on sides, with three-line inner panel, g. e.: an exquisite little MS. in very desirable condition, £105. Saec. XV.

This beautiful example is on very white vellum, and seems to have been purposely spaced out so as to allow of a large amount of decoration; though the pages are small and the letters of the text are full-size, by the use of 200 pp. containing 12 lines only, an extra large margin has been left, adding greatly to the beauty of the page: the relative proportions being, text 2 × 13; illuminated outer border 22 x, the page itself 53 × 4.

THE MINIATURES ARE: ST. JOHN; ST. MARK; ST. PETER; ST. LUKE; the ANNUNCIATION; the ASSUMPTION; the PRESENTATION in the TEMPLE; PENTECOST; the NATIVITY; the SHEPHERDS; the ADORATION of the MAGI; the CIRCUMCISION; the FLIGHT into EGYPT; the CORONATION of the VIRGIN; KING DAVID; RAISING of LAZARUS, and the HOLY TRINITY.

The BORDERS are very beautiful, in design and execution, and are specially noteworthy from the use of rich tones of blue interspersed with broad floral sprays of gold, shaded with red. With the exception of the first and two borders in the middle, which are slightly rubbed, the whole may be said to be in perfect condition; the eighth page of nearly every quire has a catchword low down on the bottom which would, in the case of a less careful binder, have been cut away.

'This is a work which no collector who can afford to buy it, or has courage to steal it, should be without. distinctive feature of this splendid book is the large series of illustrations, which were drawn with the most exquisite skill and care. The greatest delicacy has been displayed in the reproduction of the forms and tints, the lustre, light, and shadow of the coloured examples.
