IPHIGENIA IN TAURIS. V. 5. Της Τυνδαρείας θυγατρός Ιφιγένεια παίς. For θυγατρός read παιδός. We subjoin Mr. Porson's note on Οr. 368. (Της Τυνδαρείας θυγατρός ανόσιον φόνον) Θυγατρός Αld. et pauci MISS. plurimi παιδός.

V. 93. “Ηκω δε, πεισθείς σοις λόγοισιν, ενθάδε "Αγνωστον εις γην, άξενον. Αliφuando putari legendum et distinguendum "Αγνωστος, εις γην άξενον. G. We prefer Mr. Gaisford's emendation to the common reading.

V. 193. 'Αλλάξας δ' εξέδρασ' τεράς όμι' αυγάς άλιος. There is no such word in Greek as εξέδρασε. The aorist of εκδιδράσκω is εξέδραν, the third person of which is εξέδρα, as απέδρα from αποδιδράσκω. Read "Αλλαξεν δ' έξ έδρας δεδρας όμμαυγας άλιος. So El. 737. Λέγεται [τότε] (ταν δε πίστιν Σμικραν πας έμοιγ έχει) Στρέψαι θερμαν αέλιος Χρυσωπόν έδραν αλλάξαντα δυστυχία βρoτείω.

V. 340. Θαυμάστέλεξας τον φανένθ', όστις ποτέ “Έλληνος εκ γης πόντον ήλθεν αξενον. Olim erat Ελληνος εκ γής : mallem Ελληνίδος, et versui nil nocebit. This is the observation of Barnes, who has admitted into his text, 'Enano, os ix yñs, the emendation of Scaliger. We conceive that the poet wrote Ελληνίδος γης, and that the original reading was afterwards corrupted into 'Ελληνίδος εκ γης, the reading proposed by Barnes. From this corrupt lection the common text was probably formed by a transcriber, who knew that anapests were not admissible into the even places of the tragic senarius. Another instance of 'Enany in the feminine gender occurs in ν. 495 of the same play : Ποίας πολίτης πατρίδος “Ελληνος γεγώς; read πατρίδος Ελλήνων. So Bacch. 20. Εις τήνδε πρώτον ήλθον Ελλήνων πόλιν. Ιon. 8. "Έστιν γαρ ουκ άσημος Ελλήνων πόλις. Ιn defence of the common reading of these two passages, Markland cites two other examples of the feminine “Ελλην, both of which we believe to be corrupt. I. Esch. Agarm. 1263. ΚΑ. Και μην αγαν γ “Ελλην έπίσταμαι (επίστασαι Ρorsonus et emendatione Μarklandi) φάτιν. ΧΟ. Και γας το πυθόκραντα. δυσμαθή δ' όμως. That the Chorus, which was composed of the principal citizens of Argos (πρέσβος Αργείων ν. 864), understood Greek perfectly, cannot reasonably be doubted. At the same time, there seems to be no sufficient reason for mentioning that accomplishment on the present occasion. We apprehend that the poet wrote, Και μην αγαν ή έμήν επίστασαι φάτι». The chorus is importuning Cassandra to speak more fully respecting the impending death of Agamemnon. She replies, You have heard my prophecy very fully. So also, answers the Chorus, we hear the Pythian oracles. Yet they are difficult to understand. The cominon reading arose from the resemblance of 14 and M.

II. Eurip. Heracl. 131. Και μην στολήν η “Έλληνα, και ρυθμόν πέπλων "Έχει τα 8 άλλα βαρβάρου χερός τάδε. Read, Και μην στολήν γ', “Έλληνα το ρυθμόν

occur at all in those of schylus and Sophocles : Οr. 631. Μενέλαε, πού σον | πόδ' επί συννοία κυκλείς ; Βacch. 826. Ευγέθεσθε κοινή | τάδ', ένα βακχεύοιτ' αεί. In these verses tlie second syllable of the dactyl aaneres more closely to the preceding than to the following syllables. After this long and dull note, we will recreate the reader with three trimeters written by Philip Melanchthon, which, in Markland's first edition, are inserted between •. 262 and v. 263 of the Supplices: Tών συγγενών δ' αιδείσθαι δάκρυά σε χρεών, Τούς ου παθούσω άξιαμύνειν ευσεβές. Η γάρ τεκούσα σ' έστι θυγατήρ Πιτθέως.

πίπλων. • It is well known, that the ignorance of the transcribers respecting the double power of the initial P, has been the cause of numerous corruptions. So in v. 9.4 of the Supplices, all the editions prior to Μarkland read, Ξένους θ' ομου γυναίκας, ού ρυθμόν γ' ένα. The true reading, ουχ ένα ρυθμόν, was first restored from one MS. by Μarkland, who has collected in his note several instances of similar depravation. It may be observed, that in the passage of the Heraclidæ, as amended by us, the word “Ελληνα, although joined to ρυθμόν, belongs also to στολήν. So Esch. Again. 597. "Οτ' ήλθ' ο πρώτος νύχιος άγγελος πυρός, Φράζων άλωσιν, "Ιλίου τ' ανάστασιν. Soph. Ed. Tyr. 417. Και σ' άμφιπλής μητρός τε nai του σου πατρός 'Ελα ποτ' εκ γης τήσδε δεινόπους 'Αρά. Εurip. Suppl. 21. Αδραστος, όμμα δάκρυσιν τίγγων όδε Κείται, τότ' έγχος, την τι δυστυχιστάτην Στίνων στρατείαν. Ιbid. 1092. Όστις φυτεύσας, και νεανίαν τικών 'Αριστον, είτα τούδε νύν στερίσκομαι. To the above mentioned four instances of the feminine“Ελλην, we are unable to add a fifth.

V. 558. Πατρός θανόντος τήνδε τιμωρούμενος. Nothing but the difficulty of accounting for the corruption prevents us from proposing with confidence, Πατρός θανόντος αίμα τιμωρούμενος. So Alc. 736. Ει μη σ' αδελφής αίμα τιμωρήσεται. Εneo fr. 3. Εγώ δε πατρός αίμ' ετιμωρησάμην. Cycl. 691. Ει μη σ' εταίρων φόνον ετιμωρησάμην.

V. 617. ΟΡ. Θύσει δέ τίς και τα δεινά τλήσεται ; ΙΦ. Εγώ. θεάς γας τήσδε προστροπήν έχω. ΟΡ. "Αζηλά γ', ώ νεανι, κούκ ευδαίμονα. The construction of the third verse may be simplified by reading in the second, προστρόπαι’ έχω. See Photius v. Προστροπαιον.

V. 691. το μεν γάρ εις ίμ, ου κακώς έχει, Πράσσονθ' 4 πράσσω προς θεών, λύσειν βίον. One Mis. reads λήγει», and two others λήσει». The true reading, however, is λύειν. Mr. Monk has properly edited núesy instead of λύσεων, Hippol. 671, and ought to have edited λύω instead of λύσω, V. 1060. In v. 1442 of the same play, Brunck's Membranæ improperly read λύσω for λύω.

V.719. 'Ατας το του θεού γ ου διέφθορές σε πω Μάντιυμα, καίτοι γ εγγύς loturas pórov. Hunc versum ob inusitatam particularum to ye collocationem notavit Porsonus ad Med. 675. G. Mr. Elmsley (ad (Ed. Tyr. 6o, p. 112) proposes, καίπερ εγγύς έστηκώς φόνου, as if the poet had written ούπω διέφθορας in the passive sense. Harsh as the construction appears, which is produced by this emendation, the following passage, which Mr. Elmsley has not mentioned, proves that the emendation is not entirely destitute of probability. Hel. 294. Το δ' έσχατον τούτ', ει μόλοιμεν εις πάτρας, Κλήθροις αν είργοίμεσθα, την υπ' 'Ιλίω Δοκούντες Ελένης Μενέλεω μ' έλθεϊν μέτα. In translating the participle δοκούντες, we must suppose the preceding words to be, Κλήθροις αν είργοιέν με, την υπ' 'Ιλίο.

Eurip. Ηel. 499. Σπάρτη δε που γης έστι, πλήν ν' αι ροαι Του καλλιδόναχός εισιν Ευρώτα μόνον. - We have little doubt that the poet wrote πλήν ένα ροαί. For information on the subject of the initial P, the student ought to consult Mr. Gaistord's notes on Hephæstion, pp. 219, 220. To the passages in which the double power does not take place, add #sch. Eum. 232. Soph. (Ed. Tyr. 1289. Eurip. Bacch, 1336. Theseo fr. 1. Aristophe Vesp. 1067, where vv. 1066. 1070, ought to be divided into six dimeter trochaics, the last of which is cutuleciia In the anüstrophe, v. 1097, reed, am ir tie ipsong lediti datok

We hope that future editors of Aristophanes will restore the old reading of Aν. 46. ο δε στόλος των εστι παρά τον Τηρέα, Τον έποπα, παρ' εκείνον πυθέσθαι δεομένω, κ. τ. ε. Κuster first adopted δεομένων from the Vatican MS. and has been tacitly followed by Brunck and Invernizius. In the tragedy now before us, the common copies read, perhaps rightly, v. 1343. τέλος δε πασιν ήν αυτός (αυτός recte Gaisf.) λόγος, Στείχειν ίν ήσαν, καίπις ουκ εωμένοις. We should prefer εώμενοι, if that reading were found in any Ms. In the following passage, we do not require the authority of MISS. Heracl. 836. Το δεύτερον δε, πούς επαλλαχθείς ποδι, 'Ανήρ δ' επ' ανδρι στας, έκαρτέρει μάχη. Read έκαρτέρει μάχη, that is to say, μαχη ήν καρτερά. So Soph. Αnt. 259. Λόγοι δ' εν αλλήλοισιν έρρoθουν κακοί, Φύλαξ ελέγχων φύλακα.

V. 766. Καλώς ήλιξας των θεών τ' εμού θ' ύπερ. Σήμαινε δ' ώ χρή τάσδ επιστολας φέρειν Προς "Αργος, ότι τα χρή κλύοντά σου λέγειν. Can o be used in this kind of interrogation instead of τις or όστις ? Read, Σήμαινε το χρή. So ν. 256. 'Εκείσε δή πάνελθε, πως αν είλετε, Τρόπω θ' οποίω.

V. 806. ΙΦ. 'Αλλ' ή Λάκαινα Τυνδαρίς σ' εγείνατο ; ΟΡ. Πέλοπός το παιδί παιδός εκπίφυκ' εγώ. Is εκπέφυκα παιδί good Greek? We should rather have expected, Πέλοπός γε παιδί παιδός εξέφοσί με. Yes, she bare me to the son of the son of Pelops. Or perhaps, Πέλοπός γε παιδί παιδός, ου πίφυκ' εγώ. It may be observed, that in the answer to a question, γι signifies yes, as in the preceding example. See Suppl. 122, 146, 294, 575, 755, 766. Ιph. Aul. 396, 721, 1362, &c. In the following passages we have changed Tinto Γ. Suppl. 135. ΘΗ. 'Αλλα ξένους έδωκας 'Αργείας κόρας; ΑΔ. Τυδεί γε, Πολυνείκοι τε τω Θηβαγενεί. Yes, to Tydeus αnd Polynices the Theban. Ιph. Taur. 74. ΟΡ. Θριγκοϊς δ' υπ' αυτούς σκύλο δρας ηρτημένα και ΠΥ. Των κατθανόντων και ακροθίνια ξένων. The particle γε also signifies yes, when the second speaker assents to some observation

made by the first speaker, and enlarges it. So Suppl. 161. ΘΗ. Ευψυχίαν έσπευσας αντ' ευβουλίας. ΑΔ. “ο δή γε πολλούς ώλεσε στρατηλάτας. Yes, which has been the ruin of many generals. Mr. Gaisford has adopted an emendation of Mr. Porson's, δ δητα πολλούς, the propriety of which. we do not perceive. The particle δή 1s to be joined with πολλούς. For examples of this use of γε, see Iph. Aul. 334, 521, 661, 737, 1356, &c.

V. 905. “Όπως το κλεινόν όνομα της σωτηρίας λαβόντες, εκ γής βησόμεσθα βαρβάρου. Read, το κλεινόν όμμα της σωτηρίας. See Iph. Aul. 354, where Markland has restored õjajuce for őropa on the authority of all the MSS.

V.918. "Οδ' έστι γ'Ατρεως θυγατρός, ομογενής έμοί.. Οmnes Gallici, έμός. Bene, quamquam vulgata nun male. M. After the nominative case omoyerns, a transcriber is much more likely to convert έμοί into έμός, than έμός into špoi. See our observation on Iph. Aul. 1266. For this reason, among others, we prefer the cominon reading of this passage. In the following instance, the construction is injured by the use of the possessive pronoun instead of the primitive: Heracl. 417. Των μεν λεγόντων, ως δικαιον ήν (τulgo ή) ξένους Ικέταις αρώγειν' των δέ, μωρίαν εμήν Kατηρούντων. Read, μωρίαν εμού Κατηγορούντων, αccusing me of folly ; not, as according to the common reading, accusing my folly. It is well known that xatna yoga governs the genitive of the person accused, and the accusative of Η Β 3

the accusation. So Οr. 28. Φοίβου και αδικίαν μεν το δει κατηγορείν. Why should I accuse Apollo of injustice ?

V. 937. ΟΡ. Φοίβου κελευσθείς θεσφάτοις άφικόμηχ. ΙΦ. Τι χρήμα δράσιν; ρητόν, ή σιγώμενον; Κελευσθείς δράσεις is not Greek. Read therefore, Τι χρήμα δράσεων και

V. 1044. ΟΡ. Σοι δη τις άλλος έν χερούν ούσει βρίτας; ΙΦ. Εγώ. θιγείν γαρ όσιόν εστ' εμοί μόνη. Read, Συ δ' ή τις άλλος.

V. 1173. ΙΦ. Μητέρα κατειργάσαντο κοινωνώ ξίφει. ΘΟ. "Απoλλoν, ουδ' και βαρβαρους τόδ' έτλη τις αν. Απαραstum in quinta sede Editores ntactum reliquerunt. Equidem tód delendum putavi. G. We are afraid that the word which Mr. Gaisford has expunged, can hardly be spared without some other alteration of the verse. Hel. 95. TEY. Οικείον αυτόν ώλεσ' άλμ' έπι ξίφος. ΕΛ. Μανέντ'; έπει τις σωφρονών τλαίη τάδ' άν; Med. 1339. Ουκ έστις ήτις τούτ' αν Έλληνες γυνή "Ετλη ποθ'. If it were certain, that the two particles ô cú could coalesce into one syllable, we should not hesitate to propose, "Aπoλλoν, ουδ' εν βαρβάροις έτλη τις αν. The disposition of 8 to unite with the following word (as αυγώ, ούφοβείτο, &c.) and of oύ to unite with the preceding word (as μη ού, εγώ ού, επεί ού, &c.) renders it not improbable that the crasis which we propose is legitimate. We are unable, however, to produce any example of it, except the common reading of Alc. 196, upon which very little reliance can be placed.

V. 1213. ΙΦ. Και φίλων γ' ουδείς μάλιστα. ΘΟ. τούτ' έλεξας εις εμέ. Ουδείς scilicet πελαζέτω. Μ. The only authority for ουδείς πελαζέτω which we recollect at present, is the following inscription, which is painted over one of the doors of the apartments of the Royal Academy in Somerset Place: ΟΥΔΕΙΣ ΑΜΟΥΣΟΣ ΕΙΣΙΤΩ. If we had been of counsel with the author of the inscription, we should have recommended MHAEIE. In the verse under consideration, the true reading seems to be oú det.

V. 1480. "Ιτωσαν εις σην, ξυν θεάς αγάλματι, Γαίαν, καθιδρύσαιντό τευτυχως βρέτας. So also Ion. 1130. Θύσας δε γενέταις θεοίσιν, ήν μακρόν χρόνο, Μένω, παρουσι δαίτες έστωσαν φίλοις. We believe that no third instance of this form of the imperative occurs in the forty-four remaining Greek plays. In the first passage, we are inclined to read, "Iτων τε την σην. So Esch. Εum. 32. "Ίτων πάλω λαχόντες. In the Ion, the true reading appears to be εστασιν. The oldest examples of this imperative which we have observed, and which we do not suspect to be corrupt, occur in two fragments of Archestratus preserved by Athenæus: P. 4, E. "Eoruσαν δ' ή τρεις ή τέσσαρες οι ξυνάπαντες. Ρ. 56. C. Ρυσαι και δρυπεπείς παμακείσθωσάν σοι έλαίαι. Αrchestratus was probably contemporary with Aristotle. Περιμαξάτωσαν and περιθέτωσαν occur in a fragment of the Μητραγύρτης of Menander, p. 120, ed. Cler. In the age of Menander, the Attic language was in a state of rapid decline.
