FUTURE TENSE.

Future Tense of Avoir* and Être.*

1. The future tense has the following terminations for all verbs, regular and irregular: rai, ras, ra, rons, rez, ront. The letter r is the final future radical; the person-endings are, ai, as, a, ons, ez, ont.

2. Indicative Mode, Future Tense of the Troo Auxiliary

Il aura, he will, or shall have.
Nous aurons, we shall have.

REM. The interrogative and negative forms are obtained in the same manner as the interrogative and negative forms of the present tense

Formation of the Future Tense.

1. The future tense of all regular and of most rregular verbs is obtained by joining the future person-endings to the infinitive form of the verb. The verbs of the third

conjugation rose the oi of the infinitive ending oir. The verbs of the fourth conjugation drop the final e.

REM. The rules of orthography for verbs ending in yer, eler, eter, and for those that have either an acute or a silent e before the consonant that precedes the ending er of the infinitive, apply to the future tense of those verbs respectively (32)

204. Indicative Mode, Future Anterior Tense.

1. The future anterior, or compound future, is formed of the simple future of the auxiliary and the past participle of the verb.

1. The future tenses are used to express future action. They are used in French, though not in English, in subor dinate sentences when the verb expresses a future act or event; as,

Je vous paierai quand je rece- I shall pay you when I (shall) revrai mon argent.

Je répondrai à votre lettre aussitôt que je l'aurai reçue. Nous partirons dès que nous serons prêts.

2. After si, if, the verb is put in the present tense when the leading verb is in the future; but after si, whether, the verb is in the future when it is to express future time.

Je partirai, si mon frère arrive. I shall start if my brother arrives. Je ne sais s'il arrivera aujour- I do not know whether he will ar d'hui. rive to-day.

REM.--The verb will must be considered as a sign of the future tense, when it does not mean to be willing.
