the people to sit down on the ground: and he took the sev'en lo aves, and gave thanks, and brake, and gave to his disci'ples to set befo're them;' and they did set them' befo're the people. 7 And they had a few small fish'es: and he blessed, and comman'ded to set them also befo're 'them.' 8 So they did e'at, and were filled: and they took' up of the bro'ken 'me'at' that was left sev'en bas'kets. 9 And they that had e'aten were about' fo'ur thou'sand: and he sent them away. 10 And straightway he entered in'to a ship with his disci'ples, and came in'to the parts of Dalmanu'tha. And the Pharisees came fo'rth, and began' to question with him, seeking of him a sign from heaven, tem'pting him. 12 And he sighed de'eply in his spirit, and saith, Why doth this generation seek after a sign? Verily I say un'to you, There shall no sign be giv'en un'to this genera'tion. 13 And he left them, and, en'tering in'to the ship again', departed to the oth'er side.

14 Now the disci'ples' had forgot'ten to take bread, neither had they in the ship with them more than one lo af. 15 And he charged them, sa'ying, Take he'ed, bewa're of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of' the leav'en of Her'od. 16 And they re'asoned among themselves, sa'ying, 'It is' because we have no bread. 17 And when Je'sus knew it,' he saith un'to them, Why reason ye beca'use ye have no bread? perce'ive ye not yet, neither understand? have ye your hea'rt yet ha'rdened? 18 Having eyes, see ye not? and hav'ing e'ars, he'ar ye not? and do ye not remember, 19 When I brake the five loaves amon'g five thousand, how man'y bas'kets full of fragments took' ye up? They say un'to him, Twelve. 20 And when the seven amon'g fo'ur thou'sand, how man'y bas'kets full of fragments took' ye up? And they said, Sev'en. 21 And he said un'to them, How is it that ye do not understand' ?

22 And he com'eth to Bethsa'ida; and they bring a bli'nd man un'to him, and beso'ught him to touch him. 23 And he took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the town; and when he had spit on his eyes, and put his hands upon' him, he ask'ed him if he saw o'ught? 24 And he look'ed up, and said, I see men as tre'es, walking. 25 Af'ter that he put' 'his' hands again' upon' his eyes, and made him look' up; and he was restored, and saw every man cle'arly. 26 And he sent him awa'y to his house, sa'ying, Neither go into the town, nor tell it' to an'y in the town.

27 And Jesus went out and his disci'ples in'to the towns

of Cesare'a Philip'pi: and by the way he ask'ed his disci'ples, sa'ying unto them, Whom do men say that I am? 28 And they an'swered, John the Bap'tist: but some 'say,' Eli'as; and others, One of the prophets. 29 And he saith un'to them, But whom say ye that I am? And Pe'ter an'swereth and saith unto him, Thou art the Chri'st. 30 And he charged them that they should tell no man of him.

31 And he began' to te'ach them, that the Son of man must suf'fer man'y things, and be rejected of the el'ders, and 'of the chief prie'sts and scri'bes, and be killed, and after three days rise again'. 32 And he spake that saying o'penly. And Pe'ter took him, and began to rebu'ke him. 33 But when he had turned about', and look'ed on his disci'ples, he rebu'ked Pe'ter, sa'ying, Get thee behind me, Sa'tan for thou sa'vourest not the things that be of Go'd, but the things that be of men.

34 And when he had called the pe'ople 'un'to him,' with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoev'er will come after me, let him deny' himself', and take up his cross, and follow me. 35 For whosoever will save his lifę shall lo'se it; but whosoever shall lo'se his life for my sake and the gos'pel's, the same shall save it. 36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall ga'in the whole world, and lo'se his own so'ul? 37 Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? 38 Whosoev'er therefore shall be ashamed of me, and of my words, in this adulterous and sin'ful genera'tion, of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he com'eth in the glory of his Father, with the holy a'ngels.

CHAP. IX. And he said un'to them, Verily I say un'to you, That there be some of them that stand here which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the king'dom of Go'd come with pow'er.

2 And after six days Je'sus ta'keth with him' Pe'ter, and Ja'mes, and John, and le'adeth them up in'to an high moun'tain apa'rt by themselves: and he was transfigured before them. 3 And his ra'iment beca'me shi'ning, exce'eding white as snow; so as no fuller on earth can white them. And there appeared un'to them Eli'as with Mo'ses: and they were talking with Je'ṣus. 5 And Peter an'swered and said to Jesus, Mas'ter, it is good' for us to be here: and let us make three tab'ernacles; one for thee, and one for Mo'ses, and one for Eli'as. 6 For he wist not what' to

say; for they were sore afra'id. 7 And there was a cloud that overshadowed them and a voice came out of the cloud, sa'ying, This is my beloved Son; he'ar him. 8 And sud'denly, when they had look'ed round about', they saw no man an'y more, save Je'sus o'nly with themselves. 9 And as they came down from the moun'tain, he charged them. that they should tell no man what things they had seen, till the Son of man were ris'en from the dead. 10 And they kept that sa'ying with themselves, questioning one with another what the ri'sing from the dead should me'an.

11 And they asked him, sa'ying, Why say the scribes that Elias must first come? 12 And he an'swered and told them, Elias ver'ily com'eth first, and resto'reth a'll things; and how it is writ'ten of the Son of man, that he must suf'fer man'y things, and be set at nought. 13 But I say un'to you, That Eli'as is inde'ed come, and they have done un'to him whatsoev'er they lis'ted, as it is writ'ten of him.

14 And when he came to 'his' disci'ples, he saw a grea't mul'titude about them, and the scri'bes questioning with them. 15 And straightway all the people, when they beheld' him, were greatly amazed, and, run'ning to him,' salu'ted him. 16 And he asked the scribes, What question ye with them? 17 And one of the mul'titude an'swered and said, Mas'ter, I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit: 18 And wheresoever he taketh him, he tea'reth him; and he fo'ameth, and gnash'eth with his teeth, and pi'neth awa'y and I spake to thy disci'ples that they should cast' him out; and they could not. 19 He an'swereth him, and saith, O fa'ithless genera'tion, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suf'fer you? Bring him un'to me. 20 And they brought him un'to him: and when he saw him, straightway the spirit ta're him; and he fell on the ground and wallowed, fo'aming. 21 And he asked his father, How long is it ago' since this came un'to him? And he said, Of a chi'ld. 22 And oft-times it hath cast' him in'to the fire, and in'to the waters, to destroy' him: but if thou canst do an'y thing, have compas'sion on us, and help us. 23 Jesus said un to him, If thou canst belie've, all things are' pos'sible to him that belje'veth. 24 And straightway the father of the chi'ld cri'ed out, and said with tears, Lo'rd, I belie've; help thou minę un'belief. 25 When Je'sus saw that the pe'ople came run'ning togeth'er, he rebu'ked the foul spirit, sa'ying unto him. Thou' dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of

him, and en'ter no more in'to him. 26 And 'the spir'it' cri'ed, and rent him sore, and came out of him and he was as one dead; insomuch' that man'y said, He is dead. 27 But Jesus took' him by the hand, and lif'ted him up; and he aro'se. 28 And when he was come in'to the house, his disci'ples asked him pri'vately, Why could not we cast him out? 29 And he said un'to them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by pra'yer and fas'ting.

30 And they departed thence, and pass'ed through Gal'ilee; and he would' not that an'y man should know it.' 31 For he taught his disci'ples, and said un'to them, The Son of man is delivered in'to the hands of men, and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day. 32 But they understood' not that sa'ying, and were afraid to ask' him.

33 And he came to Caper'naum: and, be'ing in the house, he ask'ed them, What was it that ye dispu'ted amon'g yourselves by the way? 34 But they held their peace: for by the way they had dispu'ted amon'g themselves who 'should be' the grea'test. 35 And he sat down, and called the twelve, and saith un'to them, If an'y man deși're to be first, the same' shall be last' of all, and servant of all. 36 And he took' a child, and set him in the midst of them: and when he had ta'ken him in his a'rms, he said un'to them, 37 Whosoever shall receive one of such children in my name, rece'iveth me; and whosoever shall receive me, rece'iveth not me, but him that sent me.

38 And John an'swered him, sa'ying, Mas'ter, we saw one cast'ing out dev'ils in thy name, and he fol'loweth not us and we forbade him, beca'use he followeth not us. 39 But Je'sus said, Forbid' him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly spe'ak e'vil of me. 40 For he that is not against' us is on our part. 41 For whosoev'er shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belon'g to Chri'st, verily I say un'to you, He shall not lo'se his reward. 42 And whosoever shall offend' one of these' little ones that belie've in me, it is bet'ter for him that a mill'stone were hanged about' his neck, and he were cast' in'to the se'a. 43 And if thy hand offend' thee, cut it off: it is bet'ter for thee to en'ter in'to life maʼimed, than having two hands to go into hell, in'to the fire that never shall be quenched; 44 Where their worm di'eth not, and the fire is not quenched. 45 And if

thy foot' offend' thee, cut it off: it is bet'ter for thee to en'ter ha'lt in'to life, than having two feet to be cast' in'to hell, in'to the fire that never shall be quenched; 46 Where their worm di'eth not, and the fire is not quenched. 47 And if thine eye offend' thee, pluck it out: it is bet'ter for thee to enter into the kingdom of Go'd with one eye, than hav'ing two eyes to be cast' in'to hell-fire; 48 Where their worm di'eth not, and the fire is not quenched. 49 For every one shall be salted with fire, and every sac'rifice shall be salted with salt. 50 Salt 'is' good': but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye se'ason it? Have salt in yourselves, and have pe'ace one with anoth'er.

CHAP. X. And he aro'se from thence, and com'eth in'to the coasts of Jude'a by the fa'rther side of Jo'rdan: and the people reso'rt un'to him again'; and, as he was wont, he taught them again'.

2 And the Pharisees came to him, and ask'ed him, Is it lawful for a man to put awa'y 'his' wife? tem'pting him. 3 And he an'swered and said un'to them, What did Mo'ses command' you? 4 And they said, Mo'ses suf'fered to write a bill of divo'rcement, and to put 'her' awa'y. 5 And Jesus an'swered and said un'to them, For the hardness of your hea'rt he wrote you this pre'cept: 6 But from the begin'ning of the creation Go'd made them male and female. 7 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cle'ave to his wife; And they twa'in shall be one flesh so then they are no more twa'in, but one flesh. 9 What therefore Go'd hath joined together, let no man put asun'der. 10 And in the house his disci'ples ask'ed him again' of the same 'mat'ter.' 11 And he saith un'to them, Whosoever shall put awa'y his wife, and marry anoth'er, commit'teth adultery against' her. And if a woman shall put awa'y her husband, and be married to anoth'er, she commit'teth adultery.

13 And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them and 'his' disci'ples rebu'ked those that brought them.' 14 But when Je'sus saw it,' he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suf'fer the little children to come un'to me, and forbid' them not; for of such is the kin'gdom of Go'd. 15 Ver'ily I say un'to you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of Go'd as a little chi'ld, he shall not enter therein'. 16 And he took them up in his arms, put 'his' hands upon' them, and bless'ed them.
