THOMAS LAURIE, Educational Publisher,

"A series of surpassing excellence and value."-Su perintendent of Education in Natal.

"I esteem it both a duty and a pleasure to give the Series my strongest recommendation. The works are superior to any others I have yet seen."-The English Master, Exeter Training College.

Their many distinguishing characteristics -- especially the happy blending of the utile with the dulce -mark them out as our best series. It would be impossible to supersede them.

"It is an excellent series. The intrinsic value of all the works thoroughly entitles them to an extensive sale."-Educational Times.

"I have much pleasure in expressing my continued and increasing satisfaction with your books. They are highly valued in every

school in which I have known them to be introduced, and the most perfect success has resulted from their use. My school has

been twice examined under the Revised Code, and all passed in reading (except one) on each occasion. They are admirably suited to the capacity and real wants of children." Head Master, British School, Stanstead, Essex.

."We cannot too strongly recommend this series to the attention of educationists. All the books have been written by men of extensive acquirements, and large educational experience, thoroughly alive to the wants of the day, and in their writings displaying that active sympathy with teachers which enables them to anticipate every want, and save the expenditure of all unnecessary time and labour.

"It is as good a series as I have ever seen."- Spec

tator.

"Your books have been in use here for three years, and given great satisfaction."-Head Master, St. Paul's National School, London.

"They cannot highly praised. The lessons are skilfully arranged to suit the capacity of the various classes."-St. Catherine's Schools, Collyhurst, Manchester.

Your books supply us with a most admirable selection of poetry." Head Master, St. James' School, Holloway.

An extremely attractive work, in which all the subjects are admirably treated. It cult vates and stimulates the mind of the pupil. As a class-book for middle and upper schools, it is all that can be desired."-English Master, Exeter Training College.

"I think all these works admirably suited for our colonial schools.”—Head Master, High School, Natal

The advanced book has 1 just been adopted here. like it very much, and use it with the students, there is such variety in it." Hedges, Teacher of Languages, Lincoln Training College.

In the July number of the National Society's monthly paper, appears a review of most of the reading books at present in use, from the pen of the Rev. A. R. Pennington, Rector of Utterby, and Diocesan Inspector of Schools. Decided preference is given to Constable's series over all others, inasmuch as it combines careful graduation in language and subject matter a connexion of subjects calculated to develope the intellectual powers, and call into exercise the faculties of observation. The instruction is presented in a manner to interest children, ani contains a right proportion of the amusing element.

"I consider your reading books to be the best pub lished, and many teachers have spoken to me of them in terms of unqualified praise."--W. B. Stabs, Teacher, Congleton.

success.

"I use your books with The pupils read with great fluency and with understanding

more 50

than with any other books I have used.”—Principal, Elvet Academy, Durham

"No series could be better adapted for our National Schools." Head Master, St. Mark's Schools, Birmingham.

The constant and reiterated complaints of Her Majesty's Inspectors of

Schools, and of all intelligent educationists, of the mechanical nature of the training imparted to the young at the present time, would soon disappear, if the school literature was more characterized by the excellencies which distinguish this series. Every book shows a mastery over the subject it treats of which could only be attained by a mind perfectly conver sant with both the princi ples and the practice of education. Their use in any school could not but lead to the most satisfactory results.

"It is a series of great excellence."—Reader.

"Books of this class are the very things that are now wanted." Literary Gazette.

CATENA CLASSICORUM:

A SERIES OF CLASSICAL AUTHORS,

EDITED BY MEMBERS OF BOTH UNIVERSITIES,

[merged small][merged small][ocr errors][merged small][merged small][ocr errors][merged small][ocr errors][merged small][ocr errors]

THE Editors of this Series design to issue texts of all the authors which are commonly read, and to illustrate them with an English Commentary, which they will endeavour to render compendious as well as clear. Standard books of Classical reference being now accessible to every Scholar, it has become needless to insert in notes the mass of extraneous matter which for older editions was indispensable. On many sabjects collateral to the text the Editors of the present Series will be able to substitute reference for quotation, and will thus obtain greater scope for carefully discussing points of scholarship closely connected with the text itself. The Series is intended to be available not only for Classical Stu·lents at the Universities, but also for the highest Forms of Public Schools.
