A SERIES OF CLASSICAL AUTHORS,
BY MEMBERS OF BOTH UNIVERSITIES,
UNDER THE DIRECTION OF
THE REV. ARTHUR HOLMES, M.A.,
F. AND IFCTULE 2 OF CLAÑE ** ECF, · AMĒRIDGE, „LASSIONE
THE Editors of this Series design to issue texts of all the authors which are commonly read, and to illustrate them with an English Commentary, which they will endeavour to render compendious as well as clear. Standard books of Classical reference being now accessible to every Scholar, it has become needless to insert in notes the mass of extraneous matter which for older editions was indispensable. On many subjects collateral to the text the Editors of the present Series will be able to sub. stitute reference for quotation, and will thus obtain greater scope for carefully discussing points of scholarship closely connected with the text itself. The Series is intended to be available not only for Classical Students at the Universities, but also for the highest Forms of Public Schools.

In a handy little volume, designed for families and schools, Dr. Brewer has collected about 2,000 questions relating to the affairs of ordinary life (in four parts. An answer is given to each question. The book is a primer in social science, and will be found very serviceable as a means of instruction for children and for those adults who desire to free themselves from the ignorance and shiftlessness too often found amongst the poor. -Athenæum.

In these Lessons theory is united to practice. One by one the rules of the language are introduced, its idioms are made familiar by repetition, and the attention of the student is especially directed to the points of difference between his own language and that which he is studying. At the foot of every section questions for examination are appended, and at the end of the Reading Lessons is a most excellent vocabulary of the words made use of in the book. Part II. contains a systematic German Grammar, including Etymo

Book. With more than 150 Engravings on Wood.
Its aim is to "win to learning" by creating an interest sufficiently strong to tide over its difficulty. Two accessories have been employed--a careful selection of such subjects as cannot fail to captivate the young mind, and the profuse illustration of them by good engravings.

Parts I. and II., in paper covers, 2s. each; in cloth, 2s. 6d. each. The Two Parts complete in one volume, cloth, 4s. 6d.
In this work the student is led on insensibly from very easy lessons to those which are more difficult, while a complete knowledge of the idioms and structure of the French language is secured by the alternate conversion of French into English and English into French. Some grammatical rule is illustrated in each "Lesson," and a vocabulary of the corresponding French and English words is subjoined; but, to keep the mind constantly on the alert, each subsequent "Lesson contains some few examples of the preceding ones also.
N.B.-"Cassell's Lessons in French" are very largely used in Schools. The work is generally acknowledged to be one of the best French Lesson Books ever published.

OPPEN, of Haileybury College. Cloth, 4s. 6d.
This book is the result of the wants I experienced during some years of class teaching. It has grown, after much patient weeding, re-writing and re-arranging, after frequent consultations with those who, like myself, are engaged in instruction, to what it professes a "Graduated Reader," adapted, in the various sections, to the wants of most students of the German language,
