THE SUNDAY MAGAZINE.

EDITED BY THOMAS GUTHRIE, D.D.

(From Note by THE EDITOR.)

While aiming to bring the Bible into relation to common life, we try to express the devoutest thoughts of worship. Theology and the story of the Church; Missions and Missionaries. ustrations of God's glory in His works, and God's care in His providence; homilies on daily duties.; ill tales and sketches of character, all find a place in our Magazine. Human life has many rela and Christian experience many shades, the truth many sides: we address ourselves to each. tions,

To make good our entry into cottages as well as drawing-rooms, to be read by people of all denominations, to be of no class, or sect, or party, but belonging to all and profitable to all-such is our aim. In brief, it is our desire to aid in calling off the mind from the secular objects which necessity forces upon it during the week; to awaken from their torpor those feelings of gratitude and adoration which the Divine greatness and goodness should excite; and to make the regular return of Sunday as healthful to Society as the showers which soften, fertilize, and beautify the earth, bringing with them the influence of heaven.

The Volume commencing October, 1867, will contain the following New Works among many other important contributions :

THE VOLUME CONTAINS

Twenty-one Chapters of an entirely original and interesting Story by Miss ADA CAMBRIDGE.

Forty-five Essays, Narratives, &c., by various popular Authors.

Eleven Pieces of Poetry, mostly Original, by well-known Hymn Writers.
Reviews and Notices of Books.

Twelve Engravings on Wood by JOHN LEIGHTON, W. J. LINTON, and others.

"The anticipations which we expressed on the appearance of the first number have been fully realized. The high character which it assumed from the beginning, under Mr. Baynes's able editorship, has been thus far maintained. The circulation of this Magazine is sure to increase the more widely its character is known among Churchmen."-The Churchman.

"We commend to public notice this very useful, instructive, and well edited and well illustrated periodical, The Churchman's Shilling Magazine.' It is not only all that has been predicated of it, but thoroughly readable into the bargain. Who shall deny that it is what we have pronounced it,-a great success?"-Oxford Times.

"In keeping with the ecclesiastical symbols on its cover, the Magazine contains much that relates exclusively to the Church, but it also contains much that may recommend it to Christians of all denominations."-Coventry Herald.

"A very acceptable candidate for family favour presents itself in the first volume of this Magazine, which is printed in a type that for boldness and pleasantness leaves many of the other monthlies in the rear. The paper also is very good, and the illustrations beautiful."-Irish Ecclesiastical Gazette.

"We have already expressed an opinion that the Churchman's Shilling Magazine' is worthy of being adopted in the family circle of the English Churchman, and a repetition is almost all that need be said. There is a host of contributions on Church matters, some of them indeed very valuable.". Cambridge Chroniele.

"As a class magazine it is a formidable rival to similar publications. The contents are of a general and attractive character. The Magazine is beautifully got up, and the illustrations excellent."-Bucks Chronicle.
