OUVRAGES CLASSIQUES.

The special and undeniable excellence of M. Poitevin's method has gained for it the honourable sanction of the Council of Public Instruction which has placed the work amongst the number of those which it particularly recommends for the use of Colleges.

M. Poitevin, in his Grammaire, differs from his predecessors by relying rather upon the great writers, who are the only real legislators, than upon the rules laid down by other grammarians, many of which rules, like those of their English brethren, are obsolete.

The remarkable part of M. Poitevin's work, and which is to be found in no other, is the series of applications which enable the pupil to exercise his ingenuity and memory upon. The exercises always accompany the theory, and the student is thus left in no doubt as to the real meaning of the rules; the judgment and the memory being alike exercised.

The first volume of M. Nisard's interesting work contains an Introduction to the History of French Literature. The second volume brings the history from the Renaissance period down to the early part of the sixteenth century. The third treats of the great models of the art of writing in prose and verse, especially those whose writings exhibit the progress of thought and language, and of the influence exercised by the Court and by certain institutions upon the literature of the seventeenth century. The fourth and last volume embraces the whole of the eighteenth century, and furnishes a general estimate of the riches of our own time.
