THE COMPLETE WORKS

OF

THOMAS MANTON,

WITH FULL INDEXES.

EDITED BY THE REV. THOMAS SMITH, D.D.

WITH ORIGINAL MEMOIR BY THE REV. J. C. RYLE, B.A.

TH

HE Publisher of the "STANDARD DIVINES" having been strongly urged by many influential Clergymen and others, to carry out his original intention of publishing the COMPLETE WORKS OF THOMAS MANTON, has the pleasure to announce that he will have the first two vols. ready for delivery by the 1st February, 1869, if a sufficient number of subscribers give in their names by the 1st June, 1868. The volumes will not be stereotyped; and after the 1st June additional names cannot be received.

The works of Manton have long been held in high esteem by the Christian public, and the Publisher is confident that the issue of them in a uniform series will be hailed by many as one of the most valuable boons that can be conferred upon the student of English theological literature. At present, it is only necessary to state that the five folio volumes generally known as "Manton's Works" do not contain nearly the whole of his extant writings. The others exist in numerous volumes, a complete set of which can scarcely ever be had, and never but at an enormous price. These volumes contain many of his most valuable writings, and will all be included in the edition now projected.

It is expected that the Edition will consist of Twenty Volumes, Demy 8vo, similar to those of the second section of the "Puritan Divines" now publishing, and the large type used in that section will be given. They will be issued on the same terms, viz., an Annual Subscription of £1 1s., for five volumes, payable in advance-and will be published continuously at the rate of five volumes a year. It must be distinctly understood, however, that all subscribers become bound to take the twenty volumes, and that they will not be at liberty to discontinue at the end of any year's issue. The fact that thirty-nine volumes of the "Puritan Series" and eleven of the "Commentary Series" have been issued, and that in only one instance has there been a delay of a single day in the issue of a volume beyond the date on which it was due, will probably be regarded by subscribers as a sufficient guarantee that their copie will be regularly delivered.

The works will be published under the editorship of the Rev. Dr. Thomas Smith, the General Editor of the present series; and the paper, type, and binding will be equal to the best of those employed hitherto. The Editor will prepare full Indexes, which will add greatly to the value of the edition; and the first volume will contain an original Memoir of Manton by the Rev. J. C. Ryle.

JOHN OWEN, THOMAS GOODWIN, and THOMAS MANTON, are the most voluminous, and are generally regarded as the most valuable of the Puritan writers, and it will be no small advantage to the student to be able to procure at such a small price the complete works of the only one of these "first three" of the Puritan host not already issued in a cheap form.

From the great extent of this author's writings, the Publisher has been deterred from announcing this undertaking sooner an undertaking which he can only carry out if a sufficient number of subscribers come forward to support him. He therefore earnestly solicits all who are interested in the success of the enterprise to favour him with their support, both by subscribing themselves, and recommending the scheme to any of their friends likely to do so.

The Rev. J. B. MARSDEN, Author of the "History of the Early and Later Puritans," writes :-"I perfectly agree with my friend Mr. Ryle, that it is highly desirable to have Manton' republished, in good type too, and a handsome form, so that it may find a place in the library.

"Manton was the great preacher of the Commonwealth, and with him and Henry Smith, who preceded him by about seventy years, every man who aspires to be a good preacher, or indeed to inform himself as to the real character of the pulpit of those days, or with its eloquence, purity, and piety, ought to make himself well acquainted."

The Publisher will thankfully receive from any Friends a List of Names to whom Copies of the Prospectus may be sent.

Agents are appointed in all the principal towns of the kingdom, and an order handed to any of them will insure the volumes being regularly delivered, free of carriage. The names of the Agents in any particular district will be forwarded on application direct to the Publisher.

Opinions of the Press.

"Roses and Holly, a Gift-Book for all the Year,' is a volume of amusing, and interesting, and poetic scraps from the pens of all sorts and conditions of authors, very handsomely-indeed splendidly-bound. Among the artists are some of the most eminent members of the Royal Scottish Academy, and their work has been very ably transferred to wood. There is humour, pathos, and beauty in 'Roses and Holly,' as well in the letterpress as in the illustrations; and a neat red line round each page adds not a little to the pleasant effect of the volume. Considering that it is very beautiful, it is also wondrous cheap."-Morning Herald.

"For really luxurious books, Nimmo's 'Pen and Pencil Pictures from the Poets,' and Gems of Literature,' may be well recommended. They are luxurious in the binding, in the print, in the engravings, and in the paper."-Morning Post.
