The special and undeniable excellence of M. Poitevin's method has gained for it the honourable sam of the Council of Public Instruction, which has placed the work amongst the number of those which ticularly recommends for the use of Colleges.

M. Poitevin, in his Grammaire, differs from his predecessors by relying rather upon the great writers are the only real legislators, than upon the rules laid down by other grammarians, many of which rules, those of their English brethren, are obsolete.

The remarkable part of M. Poitevin's work, and which is to be found in no other, is the series of a tions which enable the pupil to exercise his ingenuity and memory. The exercises always accom the theory, and the student is thus left in no doubt as to the real meaning of the rules; the judgment and memory being alike exercised.
