Q. 42. How do you prove that it is a part of the moral law, and of course of perpetual obligation?

A. It was written like all the other commandments, and these only on the 2 tables of stone. 2. The reason for a Sabbath applies as much to us as to the Jewish

people. 3. The strangers and heathen dwelling with the Jews were commanded to observe it, though not allowed to join in the ceremonial institutions. 4. Remains of a Sabbath among the heathen. 5. It is called a sign, and 6. a perpetual covenant. 7. Jesus Christ observed, sanctified and confirmed it. 8. From the nature, end and design of it, and 9. no account of its abrogation, Ezek. xx. 20.

Q. 43. Was the precise time of observing the Sabbath of moral obligation?

A. No, only the devoting to God of a 7th part of time the precise period could not be essential to it. It was changed after the resurrection to the 1st. day of the week in commemoration of the death of Christ. The apostles met on that day, Acts ii. 1, uniformly, and the primitive church observed it, Luke vi. 5, 1 Cor. xvi. 1, 2, Rev. i. 10.

Q. 44. When does the Sabbath begin?

A. As civil days begin at 12 o'clock at midnight, and end at the same time, the Sabbath may and ought to be suited to that most convenient, natural and general com putation of time. God promises to those who keep it, Isa. lvi. 2, 6, 7, and Iviii. 13, 14, peculiar favour, Q. 45. What is the design of the Sabbath?

A. As a day of rest, of worship, religious instruction, meditation, &c.

Q. 46. How are we to keep it?

A. We are to cease from worldly employments, conversations, and thoughts, Isa. Iviii. 13, Rev, i. 10. To devote it to the duties of private, family and public wor ship; to religious meditations and instruction-hearing and reading the word of God; to relieve the necessitous-visit the sick, and teach the ignorant.

Q. 47. What do you say of the crime and punishment of neglecting to keep or profaning that holy day?

A. It shows contempt of God; and as it was severely punished under the former dispensation, Num. xv. 32, so we have reason to believe that such as do not follow God's example as well as command will be punished with peculiar severity. It was in ancient times kept

with the greatest solemnity and care, Neh. x. 31,

Luke xiii. 15.
