A. Canaan proper was 200 miles long from north to south and about 80 miles broad from the Mediterranean to the Jordan. Of the tribes,-Naphtali was on the north-Asher on the north-west. South of these was Zebulon extending from the Mediterranean to the lake Tiberias or Sea of Galilee. In this tribe was AcreNazareth-Joppa and Tabor. South of this was Issachar, extending from the Mediterranean to the Jordan. In this tribe were the mountains Carmel and Gilboa, and the towns of Jezreel, Shunem, Endor and Nain. The half tribe of Manasseth lay next. South of this

was afterwards called Samaria. Next on the south lay Ephraim reaching from the sea to Jordan, and in this tribe were Sharon and Shiloh. Next to this and still south, lay the country of Benjamin on the east and the small country of Dan on the west; in Benjamin was Jerusalem, Moriah, Mount Zion, Olivet, Golgotha, Jericho, Bethany and Gethsemine; Dan was about 40 by 25 miles. Judah lay south of Benjamin, having Idumia south-Dan and Simeon west; the Dead Sea east, and extending 47 miles in length. In this tribe Abraham dwelt, and Bethlehem though but about 6 miles from Jerusalem was situated in it. Simeon was at the south-west corner of Canaan, and a large portion of the territory of this tribe and Dan, was long held by the Philistines. On the other side of Jordan Reuben lay south, Gad in the middle, and the half tribe of Manasseth north-and extending to the north east of Zebulon. Levi had no lot.
