Dan 2 39. This or soon after was the aera of Euclid, Zero, and Aristotle.

They continued to be subject to his 'successors, first to the kings of Egypt and afterwards to Antiochus king of Syria and uuder Antiochus the 2d. king after, him who interrupted the temple service and set up the image of Jupiter Epephanes, in it they were severely persecuted, (to which it is supposed refference is had Hebrews 11. 36 and 37.) they revolted from him and under Judas Maccabeus and his brothers, Jonathan and Simon they gained their independence and continued to enjoy it under the decendants of that family until the year before Christ 63; Pompey the Roman general took Jerusalem, and made them tributary to the Romans and here sprung up the 4th kingdom mentioned Daniel 2. 40.

37th year before Christ, he repaired the temple from its foundation about 17 years before our Saviour and continued to reign until 3 years after his advent.

Moses and the extraordinary Judges seem like the kings after, to have possessed supreme autority. The judges were civil magistrates and the elders the seventy persons who constituted the great Sanhedrim or council of Israel. After the Israelites became subject to other nations, Tetrarchs were appointed to govern as the representatives of the kings and possessed of the same power. Centurions were subordinate and military officers, and Publicans the Roman tribute or tax gatherers.
