A. They were subject to the Romans, Augustus Caesar being the 2d emperor of Rome and in the 28th year of his reign. Herod the great was King of Judea in the 37 year of his reign, and thus was fulfilled, Genesis xlix 10. He died 3 years after our Saviour's birth and was succeeded by his son Archelaus-see Math. ii. 22. whom Augustus banished in the 8th year of Christ and reduced Judea to the form of a province; and also made Herod Antepas, Tetrarch of Galilee the same who married Herodias-see and repeat Math. xiv. 2, to 7.—and to whom Pilate sent our Saviour Luke xxiii. 6. Pilate the 5th governor after Herod was made ruler of the remainder of Judea in the year 27 of Christ. Cyrenius governor of Syria for a time extended his authority oyer Judea in the name of the emperor-see Luke ii. 2.
