Q. 36. What did he say of Jerusalem? This city was situated about 25 miles west of Jordan, and 42 east of the Mediterranean. It was first called Salem, Gen. xiv. 18, and afterward Jebus. In the days of Solomon and the kings and after the captivity it was splendid and populous. It was divided into 4 parts: 1. Mount Zion, 9. the Lower City, 3. Mount Moriah, 4. the New City.

Q. 39. When was it fulfilled? In the year 70 it was destroyed to its foundations, and even the ruins of the temple demolished by Titus, and about one million of Jews were killed in the city. Several fruitless attempts

were made to rebuild it-it was taken from the Mahometans by the crusaders in 1099, and kept under Latin kings until 1162 when it was lost. It is now a poor, thin ly peopled town, surrounded on all sides by a steep ascent and deep valley, containing about 12 or 14,000 inhabitants, and filled with ruins.

One Jesus, 4 years before, came and cried night and day through the city, wo, wo to Jerusalem, for several years, and could not be made to desist-wo to the people, to the temple and to myself, he at last said, and fell down dead. Tacitus gives the same account.
