Edinburgh, 1874

The above beautiful edition is the first collective impres
sion of this carly Scottish Classic, who has been described as
a man of accurate observation and original thought-as one
who displays a great knowledge of human nature, and who
makes pointed observations on the manners and pursuits of
mankind. He was also the author of the first metrical
translation of a Classical Writer in Britain. His body lies in
the Chapel Royal, Savoy.

His poetical works consist of:---

I. THE PALACE OF HONOUR. [An Allegorical Poem display-
ing great power of invention, and a ready command of striking
imagery; from which it has been supposed that Bunyan may
have borrowed the idea of his " Pilgrim's Progress."]

II. KING HART. [An Allegory of the Progress of Human

Life; in which the versification is superior to the "Palace of

Honour."]

III. CONSCIENCE. [An Invective against the growing

desire of Churchmen for wealth.]

IV. THE XIII BUKES of ENEADOS of the famous Poete
Virgill translated into Scottish Metir.

D'Urfey's Tory songs did much to strengthen the Royal
cause, and his PROTESTANT LAYS helped to bring Popery into
disrepute.' 'I myself remember [says Addison in The
Guardian] King Charles leaning on Tom D'Urfey's shoulder
more than once, and humming a song over with him. It is
certain that monarch was not a little supported by 'Joy to
Great Caesar,' which gave the Whigs such a blow as they were
not able to recover that whole reign. My friend afterwards
attacked Popery with the same success.'

BOOKS ON THE DRAMA :

ONE OF THE FOUR SETS PRINTED ON VELLUM:

[blocks in formation]

No Dramatic Collection can be considered complete without the above Authors, who, for the most part writers of Comedy,
flourished after the extinction of the Commonwealth. As the Text, in previous editions, had been either imperfectly or corruptly
dealt with, the several Plays are now presented in an unmutilated form. They are beautifully printed, and range with the best
editions of Ben Jonson, Shirley, and other early Dramatists.

The above set printed on vellum, which is one of the finest examples of modern times, cost its

late owner £252.

A SPLENDID EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED COPY:

(Colophon of Vol. I:) Imprinted in Flestrete

[sic] at the signe of the George by WYLLYAM

MYDDYLTON, n. d.-(Vol. II :) Imprinted

by RICHARD PINSON, and ended the last

day of August, MDXXV.

Corser's copy fetched £95, and the Perkins £96.

This work was undertaken at the suggestion of Henry

VIII., and was dedicated to him. Its style is remarkably

vivid and clear, and although a few French words are intro-

duced, Berners has adhered so closely to the English idion

as to give the book the character of an original English work.

It inaugurated the taste for historical reading and compos

ition by which the later literature of the century is charac-

terized. Fabian, Hall, and Holinshed were all indebted to

it.... Col. Jolines's translation of Froissart is wanting in

the literary flavour which still gives Berners's book an

important place in English literature. -Sidney Lee.

Antwerpiæ ex OFF. PLANTINIANA apud Joannem Moretum, 1599

This grand old Choir Book appears to have been printed for the use of the Jesuit College of St. Bertin, at St. Omer's,
having first undergone a rigorous revision.

The present is one of the finest of the productions which will always cause PLANTIN to be considered a great benefactor to
literature. The liberality and magnificence with which he conducted his profession inspired a rivalry with it in others, and the
many learned men whom he retained in his service rendered the productions of his press as accurate as beautiful.
