PREFACE.

The Natural Method, in the study of foreign languages, is generally acknowledged to be the most interesting and rapid way, and the only one that renders the pupil capable of speaking the language studied and of understanding those who speak it. Teaching by this method, however, is not yet so generally practiced; principally because the text books at hand have proved inadequate to fully demonstrate the beauties and simplicities of the method, and because teachers, accustomed to the old style of combining the two languages, have not found the books issued adapted for their use and convenience.

Students, too, have experienced more difficulty in mastering the language than they would have done, had the books been as thorough and progressive as they ought to be.

In this book, which is the fruit of many years' teaching French, the shortcomings of former books have been obviated and a result is obtained which will make the work of the pupil easier, more thorough and more attractive to himself, while at the same time it will materially lighten the work of the professor, for the following reasons:

Firstly-It is really progressive, and contains all the necessary explanations upon those forms which constantly return in conversation, like money in circulation.

Secondly-The subjects are so arranged as to include everything desirable for the student to know when undertaking the complete study of the language.

Thirdly-It contains a large number of entertaining and instructive anecdotes, selected for the purpose of facilitating conversation, for developing the intelligence of the pupils, increasing their knowledge and initiating them at the same time more and more into the beauties of the French language.
