perfons at the fame time; fo that what is related of Julius Cafar did not seem to me incredible. But this did not continue more than a month or fix weeks; which, I believe, I might have retained, had I not been unfaithful to the grace given, and grieved the Spirit of God by doubting of my Call to preach the Gospel.

A fhort Account of Mrs. MARTHA ROGERS.

Written by Mr. J. ROGERS.

[Continued from page 247.]

JANUARY 27, her cough was fo violent all the night that

she got no reft; but towards day-break the Lord abated it, and gave his beloved fleep. On waking from a gentle flumber, being asked how fhe felt her mind? fhe replied, " My truft is in the Lord; he is near to me at all times." Soon after this fhe faid, "Do, kneel down and pray; and if you please, afk the Lord to release me. O, how I want to be with my dear Lord!"

Mrs Simpfon calling to fee her, asked how she felt ? She faid, "Weaker and weaker; but quite refigned. I have caufe to be thankful that the Lord fupports me; and I believe he will fupport me to the end."

The night after, she had much fickness, and no fleep at all. In the morning fhe turned her languid face towards Mifs R. and with a fmile faid, "Well, my dear, I think my Lord will not tarry long now, O, He is a fweet Saviour!" Mifs R. faid, I believe, He will not tarry long; but you must remember, every moment you fuffer here is adding to the brightness of your crown in glory. She faid, "Well, that is a blessed thought indeed!"

While Mifs R. repeated the following verfes, the re

joiced exceedingly.

He looks, from the skies,

He fhews us the prize,

And gives us a fign

That we shall o'ercome by the mercy divine.

The Saviour of all,.

For us he fhall call,

Shall fhortly appear;

Our day of eternal falvation is near.

For us is prepared,

The angelical guard,

The convoy attends;

A ministering host of invifible friends.

Ready winged for their flight,
To the regions of light,

The horfes are come,

The chariots of Ifrael to carry us home.

For feveral days, being exceeding weak, we could scarcely hear her fpeak, only by fhort intervals. On perceiving her whisper, we attended, and her words were, "O, my precious, precious Lord! thou wilt not tarry long! I fhall foon be with thee! What a day will that be! I fhall praise thee for ever!"

At another time, after Mifs R. and I had both been at prayer for her, fhe looked at us and faid, "I am obliged to you both, and thank the Lord for you. What a mercy is it that you can pray for me thus! It has done me good. I heard you say the other day, the Lord had given you the fpirit of prayer, and I am fure I have proved it true; for I never heard either of you pray as you have done lately. I thank my Lord for it all. I am fure God is with you." She added, what fweetnefs! what happiness I feel! I am quite refigned for all the Lord does is well done VOL. VIII.

indeed!

indeed! I am glad it is just as it is. All is right. Do you pray for me, and I will pray for you. God will blefs you: I fhall meet you both again, after a little while. We fhall all get to heaven: I have not a doubt but we fhall."

February 6, she had a violent fit of coughing, and got up fome blood. On hearing us mention this, the faid, "Well, it is all right! My Deliverer is drawing nearer and nearer. He will not tarry long. O, my gracious Lord, thou wilt come and fet me at liberty! Come Lord Jesus!"

February 8. Converfing with her as he could bear it, I was saying, how many profitable moments we had spent together! She replied, "Well, my love, they will be renewed again!" Seeing me affected and in tears, she said, "What is the matter? My dear, do not grieve. A moment cannot always last! You and I are fure to meet again on Mount Sion! And it will not be long! Be of good comfort."

At another time, being called fuddenly up ftairs, I found her in a fevere agony, occafioned by the ftoppage of the phlegm. As foon as the could speak, fhe cried out, with uncommon fervency, "Come Lord Jefus! O, come quickly! O, come my dear Jefus! O, come and help me! Thou wilt come foon! I fhall foon be with thee!"

The day before her death fhe was more cheerful and conversable than for a fortnight before. Having long expected her diffolution every hour, we did not inform her of the death of her child; for we feared the furprise might interrupt her. She now however enquired particularly about him, and we told her the whole. Then lifting her eyes to heaven, with a sweetness inexpreffible, she cried, " My dear Jemmy! My precious! My, darling! Has my fweet babe indeed got to heaven before me! Well, though he has a little the fart of me, it is not much. I am going quickly. Yes, I shall foon fee him again. O, how good is the Lord!”

A fhort Account of ANN ROYLANDS.

[Concluded from page 249.]

HE week before fhe died fhe was violently tempted by

THE

the powers of darkness; but in every temptation the Lord made a way for her escape. She had many confolations mingled with her trials both of body and mind.

She would cry out, in the midst of all, "Come Lord Jesus ! Let me love thee with all my heart! I am but a young, ignorant creature; but O, let me love my God and die!" Some thieves having broke into the house, and stole several things, and among the reft a cloak of hers; fhe faid, "I fhall foon be clothed with a white, robe, white as fnow, washed in the blood of the Lamb!" Sometimes fhe would say, “I am in great pain; but I scarce feel it: I am so happy in my Redeemer. I am weak; but he is my Might: he is my Love; my God; my All!"

As her time drew near to a period, how did fhe wrestle with God in prayer for faith and patience, to hold out unto the end! Some of her words were, "Come Lord Jefus! Come quickly, and take me to thine everlasting arms! I love my Jesus! Thou wilt not leave me, fweet Jefus! Only give me patience, and make me like thyfelf, and then take me to glory!"

The day before he died, Satan was permitted to make his laft attack upon her. For fometime fhe was in an agony.. But prayer was made to God for her, and it pleased the Lord to fill the Avenger. After lying awhile, when the conflict was over, the broke out in an extaly of love and joy, and cried aloud, "Come Lord Jefus! Take me to thyfelf! Dear Jefus, how I love thee! O, I love my Jefus! I love my father! I love my mother! I love you all! and I love all the world:

world; but I love my Jefus a thousand times better. I fhall foon be with him! I fhall foon be in his arms! Do not leave me: ftay and fee me die. Before the morning, Jesus will take me to himself! I fhall be in his arms for ever and ever! I fhall fing the fong of Moses and the Lamb for ever and ever! Hallelujah! Come fweet Jefus! why are thy chariot wheels fo long in coming? and why tarry the wheels of thy chariot? O, come quickly, and let me be thine for ever!" She then lifted up her feeble voice and sung,

"For me my elder brethren stay,
And angels beckon me away,

And Jefus bids me come!

Ah! my dear Jefus, I fhall foon be with thee! I fhall foon be happy in thine embrace! I fhall foon be with him whom my foul loveth! I fhall join the hundred and forty, and four thoufand, with the innumerable company, which no man can number; and there a heavenly harper ftand, and fing the fong of love to all eternity!"

. In this folemn triumph of faith, fhe continued for an hour and half; and her words were like those of a spirit fent from paradife. After lying fometime compofed, fhe was feized with convulfions, and cried out, "Father, I am ftruck with death!" She continued for fome hours, with her eyes and hands lifted up to heaven; and with smiles of love and joy on her countenance. Her father faid, My dear, you are not afraid to die. She haftily replied, "O! no, no! I am not afraid to die !"

: After continuing for fome hours in a transport of love and joy, she quietly fell asleep, on May the 25th, in the nineteenth year of her age.
