We cordially thank the Rev. G. S. Bowes for 430 pages (and not one too many) of "ILLUSTRATIVE GATHERINGS" (Wertheim). A Manual of Anecdotes Facts, Figures, &c., adapted for Christian Preachers or Teachers. And our gratitude will be shared by any one of our readers who will judge for themselves. We know no other such Trea sury. In "CHRIST'S PRESENCE IN THE GOSPEL HISTORY" (Nelson & Sons), the Rev. Hugh Martin has done good service, by urging the vital importance of our Lord's continual Presence with His Church, a blessed Truth, too lightly valued and felt. "ROOTS AND FRUITS OF THE CHRISTIAN LIFE" (Nelson & Sons), is another of the welcome volumes that flow from the pen the Rev. W. Arnott: while "SHORT ESSAYS ON SHORT TEXTS" (Wertheim),

of

will supply profitable reading for halfhours. "THE YOUNG TEACHER"

(Wertheim) will encourage many of our fellow-labourers, and they, in their turn, will find "PLEASANT FRUITS " (Wertheim), and "RILLS FROM THE FOUNTAIN (Shaw, & Co.), by Dr. R. Newton, of Philadelphia, acceptable and profitable presents for their young charge. The last is especially to be noted as a model of good Addresses to Children. To these latter we must add "SUNLIGHT THRO' THE MIST" (Shaw & Co.), a prettily illustrated Story Book, on the Life of Luther, and the light he was God's instrument of diffusing over a dark world. For children of bigger growth, as well, we can recommend the "STORY OF A POCKETBIBLE," reprinted from the valuable "Sunday at Home," of the Tract

Society. "CHEERFUL TALES FOR MERRY LITTLE FOLKS" (Darton & Co.), is quite for the little folk, but sure to be a welcome present to them. Then we summon before us a very different class, "ELDER DAUGHTERS," and ask them to read "WOODCROFT" (Shaw & Co.), by one of themselves, whose pen, though a trifle over-ornamented, is an honest, kindly, and sensible one. "HARRY'S MISTAKES" (Wertheim), will do excellently for some of their younger brothers, whilst all the juvenile members of the family may profit by "EARTH'S RICHES," and "OUR HOME ISLANDS AND THEIR PUBLIC WORKS;" BRAZIL; ITS HISTORY AND PEOPLE" (all from the Religious Tract Society). For little folks, again, we mention the first two "MAGNET STORIES "(Groombridge & Son). "THE TWO COUSINS; OR THE STORY OF A WEEK;" and "EDITH AND RUTH; OR, CHILDREN'S INFLU ENCE (both at Wertheim's).

and

"NOTES ON NORTH ITALY AND THE SEAT OF WAR," by Rev. G. I. Hoare, (Published by Aylott), is light (query, a thought too much so), but interesting.

"AGNES LOWTHER" (Tresidder, AveMaria Lane), is an interesting sketch of mental struggles, ending in Peace,

"DAWN AND SUNRISE" (Seeleys) will charm many by the very name of the

young Christian (Gordon), whose ch2racter it pourtrays.

(Nisbet

"THE ROYAL CHARTER" and Co.). Mr. E. Higgin has recalled the story of that fearful wreck, and gathered some striking lessons from it.

"HISTORIC AND MENTAL IMAGERY," by Rev. J. W. Reynolds (Wertheim) is a new view of old facts, sober history in a coloured dress.

"CASSELL'S ILLUSTRATED BIBLE" is a wonderful instance of what can be done in the way of admirable illustrations, at a very low cost; and is to be hailed as likely to introduce the Sacred Volume into many a cottage.

"ENGLAND'S DAYBREAK" (Seeleys, Fleet Street) is a welcome repetition of the Story of the Reformation.

And we close our list with two more sober volumes, "DOING AND SUFFERING," Memorials of two of the Bicker steth Family (Seeleys), sure to be a valued addition to our already rich Christian Biography; and a contribu tion by the Rev. Edward Young, to our Church Music, consisting of a VENITE, TE DEUM, and JUBILATE (Wright and Co., Bristol), wherein good and sound musical taste enhances the value of arguments and advice, which we most sincerely hope may effect a striking im provement in Psalmody and Chanting.

The Editors will be glad to receive articles intended for insertion in the next number, not later than the end of November; and they would earnestly appeal for literary help, in commencing another volume, from friends who can kindly furnish them with Original Papers, Anecdotes, Illustrations, Notes of Lessons, or Intelligence relating to the work of the Sunday School.

A transposition of type unfortunately took place on pages 221 and 222, in our last Number, which destroyed the sense of the writer. The leaf has been reprinted, and is appended to the present Part, in order that it may be substituted for the incorrect one by the binder.

PREFACE.

OUR Fourteenth Volume is now completed. For so many years have we been permitted to address the large body of Sunday School Teachers, endeavouring to aid and encourage them in their work of love. The hope that we have succeeded has been our reward, and, with the blessing that we seek from above, we trust to go on with renewed energy.

In that period of time, momentous changes have taken place in the world around us; such as could not be paralleled in any other fourteen years. And in the lesser world of our own body, much must needs have altered. Many of our early readers have entered into their rest, and the work of Teaching has happily enlisted numbers who then had not recognised the call, or were themselves among the learners.
