HERRING'S PURE WOVE WRITING PAPER.

THE various artificial aids to which Paper Makers resort having tended, more or less, to deteriorate the quality of many Writing Papers, it was suggested to Mr. Herring, some years since, at the time he was delivering a Course of Lectures on Paper Making, at the London Institution, that it would be most desirable if he would undertake to guarantee a paper which should not only be free from the ordinary objections, but which should also be prepared in a manner best adapted for writing purposes. This Mr. Herring at once did, and designated it "PURE WOVE WRITING PAPER," into every sheet of which, in order that no mistake or disappointment might arise, he introduced the water-mark facsimile of his own signature. Several years have now elapsed since this paper was first manufactured; and during that time it has not only been in constant use in some of the largest commercial establishments; but also to a very great extent in distinguished professional and private circles invariably ensuring perfect satisfaction.

Perfection in Writing Paper depends mainly upon extreme slowness and simplicity in its manufacture, rather than, as is usually supposed, upon its smartness of finish, which is by far the lessi-mportant and less-difficult operation. Indeed, the principal cause of most objections may be traced to the efforts of the manufacturer to gratify public taste in this particular: many Paper Makers adding a large proportion of composition to the fibrous material, in some cases as much as one-third of the whole weight of the paper, similar in character to that which is employed in producing an enamelled card, and thus in the same degree imparting smoothness to the paper. Another practice, perhaps not so objectionable, but much more general, is that of using colouring matter to conreal inferior material. How far this practice extends is

ble to say, but certainly it is quite the exception

to find any paper of any quality or description in which
colouring matter of one kind or other has not been em-
ployed. In this description, however, the finest ma-
terials alone are used without the intermixture of any
injurious chemicals; and as far as experience and skill,
combined with the most careful manipulation, can en-
sure essential qualities for writing purposes, this paper
may be said to have attained the highest excellence. Its
peculiarity of surface is also worthy of remark. In the
instance of paper ordinarily used termed "Cream Laid,"
the surface is impressed with a representation of the old-
fashioned laid wire, a novelty which was introduced a
few years since, and by which means many ingenious
patterns have been tried, all tending, however, to ren-
der the surface of the paper more or less unequal, and
consequently more or less unsuitable. In the paper be-
fore us no impression whatever is made, excepting the
facsimile signature of Richard Herring, by which the
paper may be readily known. In order to ensure the
best possible material for writing, it is formed upon a
very fine wove wire, and afterwards sized in single sheets:
a finished surface being imparted to it, not in the ordi-
nary way, by metal plates, but by a process of calender-
ing, which renders it decidedly superior for all writing
purposes. It would be superfluous to enter here into a
detailed technical account of all the peculiarities of its
manufacture; the object of the present Prospectus be-
ing merely to bring the Paper more prominently for-
ward than has hitherto been attempted. Those who
feel an interest in the various processes of its prepara-
tion, will find them described in an article on Paper-
making, which has been written by Mr. Herring at the
request of the Publishers (Messrs. Longman and Co.),
for the new edition of "Ure's Dictionary of Arts and
Manufactures."

THE ABOLITION OF THE PAPER DUTY.

JAMES HOGG AND SONS beg to announce that the Abolition of the Paper Duty enables them to make a marked improvement in their POPULAR SERIES OF ILLUSTRATED Three Shilling and Sixpenny Books.

From and after this date, the Series will be offered AT THE SAME price as before, but in Rich, Novel, and Attractive Full-gilt Bindings, with gilt edges.

A variety of New Designs have been prepared by Mr. Albert H. Warren-the object in view having been an application of what are termed " Registered Tools" (which have hitherto been used only for expensive Works) to Books at a low price.

The result is believed to be one of the cheapest and most saleable Series before the Trade,-and as such, it may command favourable consideration at once from the popular character of the Works comprised in it, and the costly style of Binding now first adopted in Books at such a price.

HAMPSHIRE ADVERTISER OFFICE:

Southampton, July 27, 1861.

MYERS'S CAXTON PRINTING MACHINE.-The Hampshire Advertiser is this week printed by the doublefeeding newspaper machine invented by Mr. Myers, of this town, and now for the first time put into thorough practical operation. We may congratulate Mr. Myers on the success he has achieved, and offer our impression in proof of the excellent printing capabilities of his machine, which is unquestionably one of the most important improvements, in a mechanical sense, ever submitted to the profession. It is remarkably compact in form, requiring little room, and is worked with a comparatively small degree of Such a desideratum cannot fail to obtain speedily not simply a national but a world-wide reputation, for, as economy is the rule of the age, Mr. Myers has not lost sight of this great fact. We have put this new double-feeder to the strictest possible test, and we have very great pleasure in bearing honest and impartial testimony to its excellence in every point of view.
