Combining with the events of the Apostle's life, a short description both of the past and present state of the various cities and countries visited by him in the course of his ministry, and of the customs and manners of the people amongst whom he was at different times thrown. The execution of this design will undoubtedly give rise to many digressions from the strict line of biographical Writing, but I trust that the reader, in regarding these pages in a popular, rather than a theological, point of View, will pardon such digressions; and, for myself, I can only say, that if, in following out the plan thus laid down, the conduct or motives of the Apostle, or the slightest incident of his eventful life, should be illustrated in any one particular, my purpose will be served.
