PREFACE.

THE reading lessons which are the basis of this book are taken from the "Méthode Lexicologique de Lecture," published in Paris by J. Larousse. As far as I know, no English book for beginners in French contains a methodical set of lessons in French pronunciation. English children, however, must need them quite as much as French. I have used Larousse's book for a number of years, and find that other teachers have done the same. The difficulty in so doing is that the English has to be supplied by the teacher, and while the French is presented to the eye, the English reaches only the ear. Larousse's Reading Lessons will be found here interlined with English almost in the original order, omitting those that seemed unnecessary for English learners. Between the reading lessons I have introduced a number of simple exercises from English into French, to familiarize the learner with the
