That I might have held, que j'eusse tenu, &c. N. B. The scholar will exercise himself in conjugating the verb venir, which is besides so useful an auxiliary in the French conjugation,

THE FOLLOWING VERBS ARE CONJUGATED LIKE

TENIR.
S'abstenir. Il s'en est abstenu pendant long-temps.
To abstain. He abstained from it a great while.
Appartenir. Ce bien lui a appartenu autrefois.
To belong to. This estate formerly belonged to him,
Contenir.

Tout ce qui est contenu sons les cieux.
To contain. All that is contained under the heavens.
Détenir.

Nous l'avons détenu comme (ou en) otage. To detain.

We have detained him as a hostage. Entretenir. Je les ai entretenus à mes frais pendant un an. To keep, to sup- I have supported them at my expence for a port.

year. S'entretenir. Je me suis entretenu avec elle toute la soirée. To converse. I conversed with her the whole evening. Maintenir. Il a été maintenu dans sa charge, en dépit d'eux. To retain. He has been retained in his office, in spite of

Vous n'êtes pas revenu à l'heure convenue. To come back. You did not come back at the appointed hour. Se souvenir. Votre seur ne s'est pas souvenue de sa promesse. To remember. Your sister did not remember her proniise. Subvenir.

J'ai subvenu aux besoins de votre ami. To relieve. I have relieved the wants of your friend. Survenir.
