er nicht trinken. Und er wird noch im Mutterleibe erfüllet werden mit dem Heiligen Geiste.

16 Und er wird der Kinder von Israel viele zu Gott, ihrem Herrn, befehren.

17 Und er wird vor ihm hergehen im Geiste und Kraft Eliä, zu befehren die Herzen der Väter zu den Kindern, und die Ungläubigen zu der Klugheit der Gerechten, zuzurichten dem Herrn ein bereitetes Volk.

18 Und Zacharias sprach zu dem Engel: Wobch soll ich das erkennen? Denn ich bin alt, und mein Weib ist betaget.

19 Der Engel antwortete, und sprach zu ihm: Ich bin Gabriel, der vor Gott ftchet, und bin gesandt, mit dir zu reden, daß ich dir solches verkündigte.

20 Und siehe, du wirst verstummen, und nicht reden können, bis auf den Tag, da dies geschehen wird; darum, daß du meinen Worten nicht geglaubet hast, welche sollen erfüllet werden zu ihrer Zeit.

21 Und das Volk wartete auf Zachariam, und verwunderte sich, daß er so lange im Tempel verzog.

22 Und da er heraus ging, konnte er nicht mit ihnen reden. Und sie merkten, daß er ein Gesicht gesehen hatte im Tempel. Und er winkte ihnen, und blieb stumm.

23 Und es begab sich, da die Zeit feines Amts aus war, ging er heim in sein Haus.

24 Und nach den Tagen ward sein Weib Elisabeth schwanger, und verbarg sich fünf Monate, und sprach:

25 Also hat mir der Herr gethan in den Tagen, da er mich angesehen hat, daß er meine Schmach unter den Menschen von mir nähme.

26 Und im sechsten Monat ward der Engel Gabriel gesandt von Gott in eine Stadt in Galiläa, die heißt Nazareth,

neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.

16 And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.

17 And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

18 And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.

19 And the angel answering, said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.

20 And behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.

21 And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.

22 And when he came out, he could not speak unto them and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple; for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless.

23 And it came to pass, that as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.

24 And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,

25 Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.

26 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,

27 Zu einer Jungfrau, die vertrauet | war einem Manne, mit Namen J0seph, vom Hause Davids; und die Jungfrau hieß Maria.

28 Und der Engel kam zu ihr hinein, und sprach: Gegrüßet sehst du, Holdfelige! Der Herr ist mit dir, du Gebenedehete unter den Weibern!

29 Da sie aber ihn fah, erschrat sie über seiner Rede, und gedachte: Welch ein Gruß ist das?

30 und der Engel sprach zu ihr: Fürchte dich nicht, Maria, du hast Gnade beh Gott gefunden.

31 Siehe, du wirst schwanger werden im Leibe, und einen Sohn gebären, deß Namen sollst du Jesus heißen.

27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.

28 And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among wo

men.

29 And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.

30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.

31 And behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.

33 Und er wird ein König seyn über das Haus Jakobs ewiglich, und feines Königreich 8 wird kein Ende seyn.

34 Da sprach Maria zu dem Engel: Wie soll das zugehen? Sintemal ich von feinem Manne weiß.

35 Der Engel antwortete, und sprach zu ihr Der heilige Geist wird über dich kommen, und die Kraft des Höchsten wird dich überschatten. Darum auch das heilige, das von dir geboren wird, wird Gottes Sohn genannt werden.

36 Und slehe, Elisabeth, deine Gefreundte, ist auch schwanger mit einem Sohne, in ihrem Alter; und gehet jetzt im sechsten Monate, die im Geschrey ist, daß sie unfruchtbar sey. 37 Denn beh Gott ist kein Ding unmöglich.

38 Maria aber sprach: Siehe, ich bin des Herrn Magd; mir geschehe, wie du gesagt hast. Und der Engel schied von ihr.

39 Maria aber stand auf in den Tagen, und ging auf das Gebirge eilends, zu der Stadt Judä.

33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

34 Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?

35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee, shall be called the Son of God. 36 And behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren:

37 For with God nothing shall be impossible.

38 And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord, be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

39 And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill-country with haste, into a city of Juda,

40 Und kam in das Haus Zachariä, und grüßte Elisabeth.

41 Und es begab sich, als Elisabeth den Gruß Mariä hörete, hüpfte das Kind in ihrem Leibe. Und Elisabeth ward des heiligen Geistes voll,

42 Und rief laut, und sprach: Gebenedehet bist du unter den Weibern, und gebenedeyet ist die Frucht deines Leibes.

43 Und woher kommt mir das, daß die Mutter meines Herrn zu mir fommt?

44 Siche, da ich die Stimme deines Grußes hörete, hüpfte mit Freuden das Kind in meinem Leibe.

45 Und o selig bist du, die du geglaubet hast! denn es wird vollendet werden, was dir gesagt ist von dem Herrn.

46 Und Maria sprach: Meine Seele erhebet den Herrn, 47 Und mein Geist freuet sich Gottes, meines Heilandes. 48 Denn er hat die Niedrig= feit seiner Magd angesehen. Siehe, von nun an werden mich selig preisen alle Kindeskinder.

49 Denn er hat große Dinge an mir gethan, der da mächtig ist, und deß Name heilig ist. 50 Und seine Barmherzigkeit währet immer für und für, be denen, die ihn fürchten.

51 Er übet Gewalt mit seinem Arme, und zerstreuet, die hof färtig sind in ihres Herzen8 Sinne.

52 Er stößet die Gewaltigen vom Stuhle, und erhebet die Niedrigen.

53 Die hungrigen füllet er mit Gütern, und läßt die Reichen leer.

54 Er gedentet der Barmherzigkeit, und hilft seinem Diener Israel auf;

55 Wie er geredet hat unsern Vätern Abraham und seinem Samen ewiglich.

40 And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth. 41 And it came to pass, that when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost.

42 And she spake out with a loud voice and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.

43 And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

44 For lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.

45 And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord. 46 And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,

47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.

48 For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.

49 For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.

50 And his mercy is on them that fear him, from generation to generation.

51 He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

52 He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.

53 He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he hath sent empty away.

54 He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;

55 As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed, for

ever.

56 Und Maria blieb beh ihr beh dreh Monate: Darnach kehrete sie wiederum heim.

57 Und Elisabeth kam ihre Zeit, daß sie gebären sollte, und sie gebar einen Sohn.

58 Und ihre Nachbarn und Gefreun= deten höreten, daß der Herr große Barmherzigkeit an ihr gethan hatte, und freueten sich mit ihr.

59 Und es begab sich am achten Tage, kamen ste zu beschneiden das Kindlein; und hießen ihn, nach seinem Vater, Zacharias.

60 Aber seine Mutter antwortete, und sprach: Mit nichten, sondern er soll Johannes heißen.

61 Und sie sprachen zu ihr: Ist doch Niemand in deiner Freundschaft, der also heiße.

62 Und sle winkten seinem Vater, wie er ihn wollte heißen lassen.

63 Und er forderte ein Täfelein, schrieb und sprach: Er heißt Johannes. Und sie verwunderten sich alle.

64 Und alsobald ward sein Mund und seine Zunge aufgethan, und redete, und lobte Gott.

65 Und es kam eine Furcht über alle Nachbarn. Und diese Geschichte ward alle ruchtbar auf dem ganzen jüdischen Gebirge.

66 Und alle, die es höreten, nahmen es zu Herzen und sprachen: Was meinest du, will aus dem Kindlein werden? Denn die Hand des Herrn war mit ihm.

67 Und sein Vater Zacharias ward des heiligen Geistes voll, weissagte, und sprach:

68 Gelobet feh der Herr, der Gott Israels, denn er hat besucht und erlöset sein Volf. 69 und hat uns aufgerichtet ein Horn des Heils, in dem Hause seines Dieners Davids.

56 And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.

57 Now Elisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.

58 And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her.

59 And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.

60 And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John.

61 And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.

62 And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.

63 And he asked for a writingtable, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all. 64 And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God.

65 And fear came on all that dwelt round about them and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill-country of Judea.

66 And all they that heard them, laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him.

67 And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,

68 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people,

69 And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us, in the house of his servant David':

70 As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began:

71 Daß er uns errettete von unsern Feinden, und von der Hand aller, die uns haffen; 72 Und die Barmherzigkeit er

71 That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;

72 To perform the mercy promis

73 The oath which he sware to our father Abraham,

lang.

75 In Helligkeit und Gerech= tigkeit, die ihm gefällig ist.

76 Und du Kindlein, wirst ein Prophet des Höchsten heißen; du wirst vor dem Herrn hergehen, daß du seinen Weg bereitest,

77 Und Erkenntniß des Heil8 gebeft feinem Volke, die da ist in Vergebung ihrer Sünden; 78 Durch die herzliche Barmherzigkeit unsers Gottes, durch welche uns besucht hat der Aufgang aus der Höhe,

79 Auf daß er erscheine denen, die da sitzen in Finsterniß und Schatten des Todes, und richte unsere Füße auf den Weg des Friedens.

80 llnd das Kindlein wuchs, und ward start im Geiste, und war in der Wüste, bis daß er sollte hervortreten vor das Volk Israel.

Das 2 Capitel.

75 In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life. 76 And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest, for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;

77 To give knowledge of salvation unto his people, by the remission of their sins,

78 Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the day-spring from on high hath visited us,

79 To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.

80 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.

CHAPTER II.

ND it came to pass in those

3 Und Jedermann ging, daß er sich schätzen ließe, ein jeglicher in seine Stadt.

4 Da machte sich auch auf Joseph aus Galiläa, aus der Stadt Nazareth, in das füdische Land zur Stadt Davids, die da heißt Bethlehem, darum,
