60 Petrus aber sprach: Mensch, ich weiß nicht, was du sagest. Und also bald, da er noch redete, krähete der Hahn.

61 und der Herr wandte sich, und fah Petrum an. Und Petrus gedachte an des Herrn Wort, das er zu ihm gesagt hatte: Ehe denn der Hahn frähet, wirst du mich dreymal verleugnen.

62 Und Petrus ging hinaus und weinete bitterlich.

63 Die Männer aber, die Jesum hielten, verspotteten ihn, und schlugen ihn, 64 Verdeckten ihn, und schlugen ihm ins Angesicht, und fragten ihn, und sprachen: Weissage, wer ist es, der dich schlug?

65 Und viele andere Lästerungen fagten sie wider ihn.

66 Und als es Tag ward, sammelten sich die Aeltesten des Volks, die Hohenpriester und Schriftgelehrten, und führeten ihn hinauf vor ihren Rath,

67 Und sprachen: Bist du Christus? Sage es uns. Er sprach aber zu ihnen: Sage ich es euch, so glaubet ihr es nicht;

68 Frage ich aber, so antwortet ihr nicht, und laßt mich doch nicht l08.

69 Darum von nun an wird des Menschen Sohn sitzen zur rechten Hand der Kraft Gottes.

70 Da sprachen sie alle: Bist du denn Gottes Sohn? Er sprach zu ihnen: Ihr saget es, denn ich bin es.

71 Sie aber sprachen: Was bedürfen wir weiter Zeugniß? Wir haben es selbst gehöret aus seinem Munde.

Das 23 Capitel. Und der ganze Haufe stand auf, und führeten ihn vor Pilatum;

2 Und fingen an ihn zu verklagen, und sprachen: Diesen finden wir, daß er das Volk abwendet, und verbietet, den Schoß dem Kaiser zu geben; und spricht, er seh Christus, ein König.

60 And Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, while he yet spake, the cock crew.

61 And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.

62 And Peter went out and wept bitterly.

63 And the men that held Jesus, mocked him, and smote him.

64 And when they had blindfolded him, they struck him on the face, and asked him, saying, Prophesy, who is it that smote thee? 65 And many other things blasphemously spake they against him. 66 T And as soon as it was day, the elders of the people, and the chief priests, and the scribes came together, and led him into their council, saying,

67 Art thou the Christ? tell us. And he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe."

68 And if I also ask you, ye will not answer me, nor let me go. 69 Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God.

70 Then said they all, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said unto them, Ye say that I am.

71 And they said, What need we any further witness? for we ourselves have heard of his own mouth.

4 Pilatus sprach zu den Hohenpriestern und zum Volke: Ich finde keine Ursache an diesem Menschen.

5 Sie aber hielten an und sprachen: Er hat das Volk erreget, damit, daß er gelehret hat hin und her im ganzen jüdischen Lande, und hat in Galiläa angefangen, bis hieher.

6 Da aber Pilatus Galiläam hörete; fragte er, ob er aus Galiläa wäre.

7 Und als er vernahm, daß er unter Herodis Obrigkeit gehörete; übersandte er ihn zu Herodes, welcher in denselbigen Tagen auch zu Jerusalem war.

8 Da aber Herodes Jesum sah, ward er sehr froh, denn er hätte ihn längst gerne gesehen; denn er hatte viel von ihm gehöret, und hoffte, er würde ein Zeichen von ihm sehen.

9 Und er fragte ihn mancherley; Er antwortete ihm aber nichts.

10 Die Hohenpriester aber und Schriftgelehrten standen und verklagten ihn hart.

11 Aber Herodes mit seinem Hofgesinde verachtete und verspottete ihn, legte ihm ein weißes Kleid an, und sandte ihn wieder zu Pilato.

12 Auf den Tag wurden Pilatus und Herodes Freunde mit einander; denn zuvor waren sie einander feind.

13 Pilatus aber rief die Hohenpriester und die Obersten, und das Volf zusammen,

14 Und sprach zu ihnen: Ihr habt diesen Menschen zu mir gebracht, als der das Volk abwende. Und siehe, ich) habe ihn vor euch verhöret, und finde an dem Menschen der Sachen keine, der ihr ihn beschuldiget.

15 Herodes auch nicht; denn ich habe euch zu ihm gesandt; und stehe, man hat nichts auf ihn gebracht, das des Todes werth sey.

4 Then said Pilate to the chief priests, and to the people, I find no fault in this man.

5 And they were the more fierce, saying, He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee to this place.

6 When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked whether the man were a Galilean..

7 And as soon as he knew that he belonged unto Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who himself was also at Jerusalem at that time.

8 ¶ And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him. 9 Then he questioned with him in many words; but he answered him nothing.

10 And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused him.

11 And Herod with his men of war set him at nought, and mocked him, and arrayed him in a gorgeous robe, and sent him again to Pilate.

12 And the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together; for before they were at enmity between themselves.

13 And Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests, and the rulers, and the people,

14 Said unto them, Ye have brought this man unto me, as one that perverteth the people: and behold, I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man, touching those things whereof ye accuse him;

15 No, nor yet Herod: for I sent you to him; and lo, nothing wort of death is done unto him:

16 Darum will ich ihn züchtigen und los lassen.

17 Denn er mußte ihnen Einen nach Gewohnheit des Festes los geben. 18 Da schrie der ganze Haufe, und sprach: Hinweg mit diesem, und gib uns Barabbam 108,

19 Welcher war um eines Aufruhrs, so in der Stadt geschehen war, und um eines Mordes willen ins Gefängniß geworfen.

20 Da rief Pilatus abermal zu ihnen, und wollte Jesum los lassen. 21 Sie riefen aber, und sprachen : Kreuzige, Kreuzige ihn!

22 Er aber sprach zum dritten Male zu ihnen: Was hat denn dieser Uebels gethan? Ich finde keine Ursache des Todes an ihm darum will ich ihn züchtigen und los lassen.

23 Aber sie lagen ihm an mit großem Geschrehe, und forderten, daß er gekreuziget würde. Und ihr und der Hohenpriester Geschreh nahm überhand.

24 Pilatus aber urtheilte, daß ihre Bitte geschähe;

25 und ließ den los, der um Aufruhrs und Mordes willen war ins Gefängniß geworfen, um welchen sie baten; aber Jesum übergab er ihrem Willen.

26 Und als sie ihn hinführeten, ergriffen sie einen, Simon von Kyrene, der kam vom Felde; und legten das Kreuz auf ihn, daß er es Jesu nachtrüge.

27 Es folgte ihm aber nach ein großer Haufe Volks, und Weiber, die klagten und beweineten ihn.

28 Jesus aber wandte sich um zu ihnen und sprach: Ihr Töchter von Jerusalem, weinet nicht über mich, fondern weinet über euch selbst und über eure Kinder.

16 I will therefore chastise him, and release him.

17 (For of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast.) 18 And they cried out all at once, saying, Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas:

19 (Who, for a certain sedition made in the city, and for murder, was cast into prison.)

20 Pilate therefore, willing to release Jesus, spake again to them. 21 But they cried, saying, Crucify him, crucify him.

22 And he said unto them the third time, Why, what evil hath he done? I have found no cause of death in him; I will therefore chastise him, and let him go.

23 And they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified: and the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed.

24 And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required.

25 And he released unto them him that for sedition and murder was cast into prison, whom they had desired; but he delivered Jesus to their will.

26 And as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Je

sus.

27 T And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him.

28 But Jesus turning unto them, said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children.

Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck. 30 Then shall they begin to say

to the hills, Cover us.

32 Es wurden aber auch hingeführet zween andere Uebelthäter, daß sie mit ihm abgethan würden.

33 Und als sie kamen an die Stätte, die da heißt Schädelstätte, kreuzigten fle ihn daselbst, und die Uebelthäter mit ihm, einen zur Rechten, und einen zur Linken.

34 Jesus aber sprach: Vater, vergib ihnen, denn sie wissen nicht, was sie thun. Und sie theilten seine Kleider, und warfen das Loos darum.

35 Und das Volk stand, und fah zu. Und die Obersten sammt ihnen spotteten seiner, und sprachen: Er hat Andern geholfen, er helfe ihm selber, ist er Christ, der Auserwählte Gottes.

36 Es verspotteten ihn auch die Kriegsknechte, traten zu ihm, und brachten ihm Essig,

37 Und sprachen: Bist du der Juden König, so hilf dir selber.

38 Es war auch oben über ihm geschrieben die Ueberschrift, mit_griechischen, und lateinischen, und ebräischen Buchstaben: Dies ist der Juden König.

39 Aber der Uebelthäter einer, die da gehenkt waren, lästerte ihn, und sprach: Bist du Christus, so hilf dir selbst und uns.

40 Da antwortete der andere, strafte ihn, und sprach: Und du fürchtest dich auch nicht vor Gott, der du doch in gleicher Verdammniß bist?

41 Und zwar wir sind billig darinnen; denn wir empfangen, was unsere Thaten werth sind. Dieser aber hat nichts Ungeschicktes gehandelt.

42 Und sprach zu Jesu: Herr, geBenke an mich, wenn du in dein Reich kommst.

43 Und Jesus sprach zu ihm: Wahrlich, ich sage dir, heute wirst du mit mir im Paradiese seyn.

44 Und es war um die sechste Stunde, und es ward eine Finsterniß über

31 For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?

32 And there were also two others, malefactors, led with him to be put to death.

33 And when they were come to the place which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors; one on the right hand, and the other on the left.

34 T Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them: for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

35 And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God.

36 And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar,

37 And saying, If thou be the King of the Jews, save thyself.

38 And a superscription also was written over him, in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

39 And one of the malefactors, which were hanged, railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us.

40 But the other answering, rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation?

41 And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss.

42 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.

43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To-day shalt thou be with me in paradise.

44 And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness

45 Und die Sonne verlor ihren Schein, und der Vorhang des Tempels zerriz mitten entzwey.

46 Und Jesus rief laut, und sprach: Vater, ich befehle meinen Geist in deine Hände. Und als er das gesagt, verschied er.

47 Da aber der Hauptmann sah, was da geschah, pries er Gott, und sprach: Fürwahr, dieser ist ein from mer Mensch gewesen.

48 und alles Volk, das dabeh war und zusah, da sie sahen, was da geschah; schlugen sie an ihre Brust, und

wandten wieder um.

49 Es standen aber alle seine Verwandten von ferne, und die Weiber, die ihm aus Galiläa waren nachgefolget, und sahen das alles.

50 Und siehe, ein Mann, mit Namen Joseph, ein Rathsherr, der war ein guter frommer Mann.

51 Der hatte nicht gewilliget in ihren Rath und Handel; der war von Arimathia, der Stadt der Juden, der auch auf das Reich Gottes wartete.

52 Der ging zu Pilato, und bat um ben Leib Jesu,

53 Und nahm ihn ab, wickelte ihn in eine Leinwand, und legte ihn in ein gehauen Grab, darinnen Niemand je gelegen war.

54 Und es war der Rüsttag, und der Sabbath brach an.

55 Es folgten aber die Weiber nach, die mit ihm gekommen waren aus Ga- | lilaa, und beschaueten das Grab, und wie sein Leib geleget ward.

56 Sie tehreten aber um, und bereiteten Spezereh und Salben; und den Sabbath über waren sle stille nach dem Gesetze.

45 And the sun was darkened, and the vail of the temple was rent in the midst.

46 T And when Jesus had cried

with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.

47 Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a right

eous man.

48 And all the people that came together to that sight, beholding the things which were done, smote their breasts and returned.

49 And all his acquaintance, and the women that followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things.

50 ¶ And behold, there was a man named Joseph, a counsellor: and he was a good man, and a just:

51 (The same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them :) he was of Arimathea, a city of the Jews; who also himself waited for the kingdom of God.

52 This man went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus.

53 And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid.

54 And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on. 55 And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid.

56 And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath-day, according to the commandment.

CHAPTER XXIV.

NOW upon the first day of the week, very early in the morn
