Knowing that a man is not juftified by the works of the law, but Q. 71. How is juftification an act of God's free grace? A. Although Chrift, by his obedience and death, did make a proper, real, and full fatisfaction to God's justice in the behalf of them that are juftified c; yet in as much as God accepteth the fatisfaction from a Surety, which he might have demanded of them, and did provide this Surety, his own only Son d, imputing his righteousness but by the faith of Jefus Chrift, even we have believed in Jefus Chrift; that we might be juftified by the faith of Chrift,and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law fhall no flesh be juftified. Phil. iii. 9. And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Chrift, the righteousness which is of God by faith. 71. c Rom. v. 8. But God com mendeth his love towards us, in that while we were yet finners, Chrift died for us. v. 9. Much more then being now juftified by his blood, we shall be faved from wrath through him. v. 10. What is justifying faith? A. Juftifying faith is a faving grace i, wrought in the heart of a finner by the Spirit k, and word of God !, whereby he, being convinced of his fin and mifery, and of the disability in himself, and all other creatures, to recover him out of his loft condition m, not only affenteth to the truth vide him a portion with the great, and he fhall divide the fpoil with the ftrong: because he hath poured out his foul unto death: and he was numbered with the tranfgreffors, and he bare the fin of many, and made interceffion for the tranfgreffors. Heb. vii. 22. By fo much was Jefus made a furety of a better teftament. Rom. viii. 32. He that fpared not his own fon, but delivered him up for us all, how fhall he not with him alfo freely give us all things? Pet. i. 18. Forafmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as filver and gold, from your vain converfation received by tradition from your fathers; v. 19. Q.73. How doth faith justify a finner in the fight of God? A. Faith juftifies a finner in the fight of God, not be cause of those other graces which do always accompany it, or of good works that are the fruits of it q, nor as if the grace of faith, or any act thereof, were imputed to him for his juftification r; but only as it is an inftrument by which he receiveth and applieth Chrift and his righteouf nefs f and to the reft of the apoftles, Men and brethren, what fhall we do? Acts xvi. 30. And brought them out, and faid, Sirs, what must I do to be faved John xvi. 8. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of fin, and of righteonfnefs, and of judgment .. Of fin, becaufe they believe not in me. Rom. v. 6. For when we were yet without ftrength, in due time Chrift died for the ungodly. Eph. ii. 1. Adoption is an act of the free grace of God t, in and for his only Son Jesus Christ v, whereby all those that are justified are received into the number of his children w, have his name put upon them x, the Spirit of his Son given to themy, are under his fatherly care and difpenfations z, admitted to all the liberties and privileges of the fons of God, made heirs of all the promises, and fellow-heirs with Chrift in glory a. Q.75. What is fanctification? A. Sanctification is a work of God's grace, whereby they whom God hath, before the foundation of the world, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Chrift, the righteousness which is of God by faith. Gal. ii. 16. Knowing that a man is not juftified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jefus Chrift, even we have believed in Jefus Chrift; that we might be juftified by the faith of Chrift, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law fhall no flesh be juftified. 74. t 1 John iii. 1. Behold, what manner of love the Father hath beftowed upon us, that we fhould be called the fons of God. Eph. i. 5. Having predeftinated us to the adoption of children by Jefus Chrift to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will. Gal. iv. 4. But when the fulness of the time was come, God fent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, v. 5. To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of fons. w John i. 12. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the fons of God, even to them that believe on his name. x 2 Cor. vi. 18. And will be a Father unto you, and ус fhall be my E e fons and daughters, faith the Lord Almighty. Rev. iii. 12. Him that overcometh, will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerufalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God; and I will write upon him my new name. Gal. iv. 6. And becaufe ye are fons, God hath fent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. z Ffal. ciii. 13. Like as a father pitieth his children: fo the Lord pitieth them that fear him. Prov. xiv. 26. In the fear of the Lord is ftrong confidence; and his children fhall have a place of refuge. Matth. vi. 32.---For your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all thefe things. a Heb. vi. 12. That ye be not flothful, but followers of them, who through faith and patience inherit the promises. Rom. viii. 17.
