SGAN. It is not courteous to pay a visit to the man you have killed.

D. JUAN. On the contrary, it is a visit which will show my courtesy to him and which he ought to receive with a good grace, if he is anything of a gentleman. Come, let us go in.

(The tomb opens, and reveals a superb mausoleum and the statue of the Commander.)

SGAN. Ah! how beautiful it is! What fine statues ! what exquisite marble! what handsome pillars! Ah! how beautiful it is! What do you think of it, Monsieur?

D. JUAN. That it is impossible for the ambition of a dead man to go farther. I think it wonderful that a man who, during his lifetime, lived in a very simple dwelling, should desire to have one so magnificent when he has no longer occasion for it.

D. JUAN. Il aurait tort, et ce serait mal recevoir l'honneur que je lui fais. Demande-lui s'il veut

SGAN. C'est une chose dont il n'a pas besoin, je crois.

D. JUAN. Demande-lui, te dis-je.

SGAN. Vous moquez-vous?

D. JUAN. Eh bien ! que veux-tu dire, traître?

SGAN. Je vous dis la Statue.

SGAN. La Statue m'a fait signe.

D. JUAN. La peste le coquin !

SGAN. Elle m'a fait signe, vous dis-je: il n'est rien de plus vrai. Allez-vous-en lui parler vous-même pour voir.

D. JUAN. Viens, maraud, viens, je te veux bien faire toucher au doigt ta poltronnerie. Prends garde. Le Seigneur Commandeur voudrait-il venir souper avec moi?

(La Statue baisse encore la tête.)

SGAN. Here is the statue of the Commander.
D. JUAN. Really, he looks well in the dress of a
Roman Emperor.

SGAN. Upon my word, Monsieur, it is well conceived. It seems as though he were alive, and were going to speak. He casts such a glance at us as would terrify me were I quite alone. I think he is not pleased to see us.

D. JUAN. He would be wrong: it would be an ill reception of the honour I do him. Ask him if he will come to sup with me.

SGAN. That is a thing he does not need, I think.
D. JUAN. Ask him, I say.

SGAN. You are jesting? It would be foolish to go and speak to a statue.

D. JUAN. Do what I bid you.

SGAN. What a whim! Seigneur Commander

laugh at my folly, but my master makes me do it. Seigneur Commander, my master, Don Juan, asks you if you will do him the honour to come and sup with him. (The Statue nods its head.) Ha!

D. JUAN. What is it? What is the matter with you? Come, tell me, will you speak?

SGAN. (makes the same sign which the Statue made to him and nods his head.) The Statue.

D. JUAN. Well, what do you want to say, rascal?
SGAN. I tell you the Statue

D. JUAN. Well! the Statue? If you do not speak I will knock you down.

SGAN. The Statue made a sign to me.

D. JUAN. Deuce take the fellow !

SGAN. It made a sign to me, I tell you: it is the simple truth. Go yourself and speak to it and

you will see. Perhaps. D. JUAN. Come, rogue, come, I will soon make you realise your cowardice. Now look. Would his Excellency the Commander take supper with me?

(The Statue again nods its head.)

SGAN. Je ne voudrais pas en tenir dix pistoles. Eh bien! Monsieur?

D. JUAN. Allons, sortons d'ici.

SGAN. Voilà de mes esprits forts, qui ne veulent rien croire.

SCENE I

DOM JUAN, SGANARELLE

D. JUAN. Quoi qu'il en soit, laissons cela: c'est une bagatelle, et nous pouvons avoir été trompés par un faux jour, ou surpris de quelque vapeur qui nous ait troublé la vue.

SGAN. Eh! Monsieur, ne cherchez point à démentir ce que nous avons vu des yeux que voilà. Il n'est rien de plus véritable que ce signe de tête; et je ne doute point que le Ciel, scandalisé de votre vie, n'ait produit ce miracle pour vous convaincre, et pour vous retirer de . . .

D. JUAN. Écoute. Si tu m'importunes davantage de tes sottes moralités, si tu me dis encore le moindre mot là-dessus, je vais appeler quelqu'un, demander un nerf de bœuf, te faire tenir par trois ou quatre, et te rouer de mille coups. M'entends-tu bien?

SGAN. Fort bien, Monsieur, le mieux du monde. Vous vous expliquez clairement; c'est ce qu'il y a de bon en vous, que vous n'allez point chercher de détours: vous dites les choses avec une netteté admirable. D. JUAN. Allons, qu'on me fasse souper le plus tôt que l'on pourra. Úne chaise, petit garçon.
