wicked Spirits, which be authors and workers of difcord, to bear fuch a fwing in thy Kingdom unchecked? Shalt thou fuffer the ftrong Captain of mifchief, whom thou once overthreweft, again to invade thy Tents, and to fpoil thy Soldiers? When thou were there a Man converfant among Men, at thy Voice fled the Devils. Send forth we beseech thee, O Lord, thy Spirit which may drive away out of the breafts of all them that profefs thy Name, the wicked Spirits, Mafters of Riot, of Covetousness, of Vain-glory, of Carnal Luft, of Mischief and Discord. Create in us, O our God and King, a clean heart, and renew thy holy Spirit in our breasts; pluck not from us thy Holy Ghoft, render unto us the joy of thy faving health, and with thy principal Spirit ftrengthen thy Spouse and the Herdmen thereof. By this Spirit thou reconciled ft the Earthly to the Heavenly: By this thou didft frame and reduce so many Tongues, fo many Nations, fo many fundry forts of Men into one body of a Church, which Body by the fame Spirit is knit to Thee their Head. This Spirit, if thou wilt vouchsafe to renew in all Mens Hearts, then fhall all thefe foreign Miferies ceafe; or if they ceafe not, they fhall turn to the profit and avail of them which love thee. Stay this Confufion, fet in order this horrible Chacs. (O Lord Jefus) let thy Spirit ftretch out it felf upon these waters of evil wavering Opinions. And because thy Spirit, which according to thy Prophet's laying, containeth all things, hath alfo the Science of fpeaking; make, that like as unto all them which be of thy House is one

Light, one Baptifm, one God, one Hope, one Spirit, to they may alfo have one Voice, one Note, one Song, profeffing one Catholick Truth. When thou didft mount up to Heaven triumphantly, thou threweft out from above thy precious things, thou gaveft gifts amongst Men, thou dealteft fundry rewards of thy Spirit. Renew again from above thy old bounti fulness, give that thing to thy Church, now fainting and growing downward, that thou gaveft unto her fhooting up, at her firft beginning. Give unto Princes and Rulers the gracefo to ftand in awe of thee, that they fo may guide the Commonweal; as they should hortly render account unto thee that art the King of Kings. Give Wifdom to be always affiftant unto them, that whatever is beft to be done, they may efpy it in their minds, and purfue the fame in their doings. Give to the Bishops the gift of Prophecy, that they may declare and interpret holy Scripture, not of their own Brain, but of thine infpiring. Give them the threefold Charity which thou once demandedft of Peter, what time thou didst betake unto him the Charge of thy Sheep. Give to the Priefts the love of Sobernefs and of Chaftity? Give to thy People a good Will to follow thy Commandments, and a readiness to obey fuch Perfons as thou haft appointed over them. So fhall it come to pafs, if through thy gift thy Princes should command that thou requireft, if thy Paftors and Herdmen fhall teach the fame, and thy People obey them both, that the old Dignity and Tranquility of the Church fhall re

turn

turn again with a goodly order unto the glory of thy Name. Thou pared'it the Ninevires appointed to be deftroyed as foon as they converted to repentance, and wilt thou despise thy House falling down at thy Feet, which inftead of fackcloath bath fighs, and inftead of ashes tears? Thou promifest Forgivenels to fuch as turn unto thee, but this felf thing is thy gift, a Man to turn with his whole heart unto thee, to the intent all our goodness fhould redound unto thy glory. Thou art the Maker, repair the work that thou haft fashioned. Thou art the Redeemer, fave that thou haft bought, Thou art the Saviour fuffer not them to perish which do hang on thee. Thou art the Lord and Owner, challenge thy Poffeffion. Thou art the Head, help thy Members. Thou art the King, give us a reverence of thy Laws. Thou art the Prince of Peace, breathe upon us brotherly love. Thou art the God, have pity on thy humble befeechers, be thou according to Paul's laying, all things in all Men, to the intent the whole Quire of thy Church, with agreeing minds and confonant voices for Mercy obtained at thy Hands, may give thanks to the Father, Son and Holy Ghoft: which after the moft perfect example of concord be diftinguished in pro perty of Persons and one in Nature: to whom be praife and glory eternally. Amen.
