34 He spake the word, and the grasshoppers came * and cater-I-pillars in--numerable: and did eat up all the grass in their land* and devoured the fruit of their ground.

35 He smote all the first-born in their land: éven the chief of I all their strength. 36 He brought them forth álso with silver. and I gold: there was not one feeble I person

EVENING PRAYER.

PSALM cvi.-Confitemini Domino.

GIVE thanks unto the Lórd, for he is gra. cious and his mercy. en- I -dureth for I

ever.

F. 2 Who can express the noble acts of the Lord : ór I shew forth all his I praise?

3 Blessed are they that I alway. keep I judgement: and I do I righteous- I -ness.

4

Remember me O Lord according to the favour that thou béarest I unto thy people : 0 vísit me with I thy sal- I -vation;

5 That I may see the felicity I of thy I chosen : and rejoice in the gladness of thy people * ánd give thanks with I thine in- | -heritance.

6 We have sinned with our fathers: we have dóne a--miss and I dealt I wickedly.

7 Our fathers regarded not thy wonders in Egypt * neither kept they thy great goodness in re- I membrance: but were disobedient at the sea * éven at the Red | sea.

8 Nevertheless, he helped them fór his | Name's I sake that he might make his I power I to be I

known.

9 He rebuked the Red sea also * and it was I dried l up so he led them through the deep as I through a wilderness.

10 And he saved them from the adver- I -sary's I and delivered them from the hand I of the I enemy.

II As for those that troubled them the waters óver-whelmed I them: there was not I one of them I left.

12 Then believed they his words and sáng | praise unto him.

13 But within a while they for- I -gat his works : ånd would I not a- I -bide his I counsel. 14 But lust came upon them I in the wilderness : and they témpted | God I in the desert. 15 And he gave them I their de- I -sire

16 They angered Moses álso I in the I tents Aáron the saint I of the Lord.

17 So the earth opened, and I swallowed

up

Dathan and covered the cóngre- I -gation I

of A-I-biram.

18 And the fire was kindled in their company: the flame burnt up I the un- I -godly.

19 They made a I calf in Horeb : and worshipped. the molten I image.

20 Thús they I turned

their

glory

into the

similitude of a I calf that I eateth hay. 21 And they forgát | God their | Saviour: who had dóne so great | things in | Egypt;

22 Wondrous works in the land of Ham and fearful things by the | Red I sea.

23 So he said, he would have destroyed them

had

not Moses his chosen stood before him | in the gap to turn away his wrathful indignátion, lest he I should de- I -stroy them.

24 Yea, they thought scórn of that pleasant! land and gave no I credence I unto his word;

25 But murmured | in their I tents: and hearkened not unto the I voice of the Lord.

26 Then lift he úp his hand a- I -gainst them : to over--throw them in the wilderness; 27 To cast out their séed a--mong the I nations : and to scatter. them I in the lands.

28 They joined themselves unto | Baal- I -peor : and ate the I offerings I of the I dead.

29 Thus they provoked him to anger with their own in-ventions and the plague was great a--mong them.

30 Thén stood up! Phinees. and | prayed : ánd I so the plague ceased.

31 And that was counted unto him for righteous. ness among áll pos- I -teri. ties for ever- I

more.

32 They angered him also at the I waters

strife so that he púnished

their sakes;

of I

Moses. for

33 Because they pro-I-voked. his spirit: so that he spake unad- I -visedly I with his | lips.

34 Neither destroyed | they the I heathen: as the l Lord com- I-manded I them;

35 But were mingled a--mong the heathen: and I learned their works.

36 Insomuch that they worshipped their idols * which turned to their own de- -cay: yea, they offered their sons and their I daughters | unto devils;

37 And shed innocent blood*even the blood of their sóns and of their daughters: whom they offered unto the idols of Canaan * and the lánd I was de- I -filed with blood.

[ocr errors]

38 Thus were they stained with their own I works: and went a whóring with their own in- I ventions.

39 Therefore was the wrath of the Lord kindled a l gainst his people: insomúch that he ab- I horred his I own in- I -heritance.

40 And he gave them over into the hånd I of the I heathen and they that hated them were I lords over them.

41 Their enemies op- -pressed I them: ånd I had them in sub- I -jection.

42 Many a time did he de- 1 -liver them: but they

rebelled against him with their own inventions and were brought I down in their I wickedness.

43 Nevertheless when he saw I their ad- I -versity: hé I heard their com- 1-plaint.

44 He thought upon his covenant, and pitied them* according unto the múltitude I of his I mercies: yea, he made all those that led them away | captive to pity | them.

45 Deliver us, O Lord our God* and gather us from a- I -mong the heathen: that we may give thanks unto thy holy Name * and máke our boast of thy I praise.

46 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel from everlásting, and world with. out I end: and let áll the people say A- I -men.
