Ethiopia: The Land, Its People, History and CultureYohannes K. Mekonnen New Africa Press, 2013 - 428 pages This book is a general survey of Ethiopia as a country and its people. It focuses on many subjects about Ethiopia's history, geography, politics and the diverse cultures of its people who collectively constitute one of the most fascinating countries in the history of Africa and of the entire world. It starts from the beginning when foundations were laid for what was later to become the country of Ethiopia which is one of the oldest civilisations in the world. Ethiopia also has the distinction of being the oldest Christian nation in Africa and one of the three oldest Christian countries in the world after Georgia and Armenia. Ethiopia converted to Christianity centuries before Europe did. And it is mentioned in the Bible many times. The book also covers Eritrea - its people, history and culture - but not in as much detail as it does Ethiopia. Still, the information about Eritrea is enough to serve as a simple and general introduction to the country. But the main focus of the book is on Ethiopia. |
