That I might have held, que j'eusse tenu, &c. N.B. The scholar will exercise himself in conjugating the verb tenir, which is, besides, so useful an auxiliary in the French conjugation.

THE FOLLOWING VERBS ARE CONJUGATED LIKE

TENIR.

S'abstenir.

Il s'en est abstenu pendant long temps. To abstain.

He abstained from it a great while. Appartenir.

Ce bien lui a appartenu autrefois. To belong to.

This estate formerly belonged to him. Contenir.

All that is contained under the heavens. Détenir.

Je les ai entretenus à mes frais pendant un an. To keep, to sup- I have supported them at my expence for a port.
