Battre and its derivatives have a trifling irregularity in their orthography, losing one t in the three first persons of the present of the indicative, and second person singular of the imperative : example, je bats, tu bats, il but, buts. Rompre, and its derivatives, require t to be added to the third person singular of the indicative present : example, il rompt, corrompt, &c.

Pondre. Nos poules commencent déjà à pondre.
To lay eggs.

Our hens already begin to luy eggs.
Correspondre. Je correspondrai volontiers avec lui.
To correspond. I shall willingly correspond with him.
Répondre. Il n'a répondu à aucune de mes lettres.
To answer. He has answered none of my letters.
Perdre.

Il a perdu tout son argent au jeu.
To lose.

He has lost all his money at play.
Répandre. Vous avez répandu du bouillon sur la table.
To spill. You have spilled some broth on the table.
Répandre. C'est lui qui a répandu la nouvelle.
To spread.

It is he who has spread the news.
