PREFACE.

THE object to be attained in studying a foreign language is the ability to understand, to write and to speak it at the earliest possible moment.

In publishing this METHOD, the fruit of many years' experience in teaching, the author hopes to render a service to those who desire to learn the French language. He has followed closely and methodically a practical method, avoiding confusion by giving only a limited number of words in each lesson, upon which words the lesson is based.

PART FIRST embraces the most important rules for pronunciation, and twenty-five progressive lessons, each containing:

1. From twelve to sixteen words with their definitions, arranged in classes.

2. A portion of the conjugation of some verb. These lessons are so divided and arranged, that when the twenty-five lessons are learned the pupil will be able to conjugate verbs in the four forms.

3. Practical rules and vocabularies of verbs, pronouns, adjectives, etc., together with such idiomatic phrases as are needed.

4. A collection of examples based on the materials of the lesson.

5. Themes, in which familiar expressions are given, composed of words already learned.
