JULY 1, 1869.

in treating of the celibacy of the clergy, says, "This subject has recently been treated with very great learning and with admirable impartiality by an American author, Mr. Henry C. Lea, in his History of Sacerdotal Celibacy (Philadelphia, 1867), which is certainly one of the most valuable works that America has produced. Since the great history of Dean Milman I know no work in English which has thrown more light on the moral condition of the middle ages, and none which is more fitted to dispel the gross delusions concerning that period which Positive writers, and writers of a certain ecclesiastical school have conspired to sustain." This commendation of our townsman is the more gratifying inasmuch as it comes from one who, as a fellow laborer in the same department, is thus enabled specially and thoroughly to test the merit of the researches of his predecessor.

RELIGIOUS.

The Life of Cain. By Rev. Isaac K. Loos. pp. 170. The Ripe Harvest, or the Work to be Done, and the Increase of Laborers needed in the Ministry of the Reformed Church. pp. 119.

Each of these is from S. R. Fisher & Co., Philadelphia. The "Life of Cain" is quite an interesting volume, embodying the results of a good deal of reading. The latter work is an appeal to the denomination to which it is addressed, in behalf of a prompt increase of its ministry.

Preliminary Truths of Religion. By Thomas M. Clark, D. D., LL. D. pp. 313. New York: D. Appleton & Co.

grammatical errors have been corrected, and such expressions, phrases, and rules as were deemed deficient in correctness, elegance, or accuracy, have been altered. These improvements will increase the favor with which Ahn's method has been received in the United States and the British Provinces.

In the School Room; Chapters on the Philosophy of Education. By John S. Hart, Principal of the New Jersey State Normal School, second edition. pp. viii., 276. Philad.: Eldredge & Brother. The preface does not indicate what changes, if any, have been made in the second edition of this work. Mr. Hart has, however, had such experience as an educator, that what he has heretofore said is well worthy of attention.

FICTION.

The Virginians; a Tale of the Last Century. By W. M. Thackeray. pp. vii., 542. Boston: Fields, Osgood & Co.

This is an additional instalment of the "Household Edition" of Thackeray's works which Fields, Osgood & Co. are issuing. We have heretofore taken occasion to commend the neat form in which this edition is produced, and from its legibility and cheapness it has deservedly become popular. The Bride's Fate; a Sequel to The Changed Brides. By Mrs. Emma D. E. N. Southworth, Philadelphia. T. B. Peterson & Brothers.

Mrs. Southworth seems to be inexhaustible. We have here another "last," and even now she has in press still another new one entitled "The Prince of Darkness; a Romance of the Blue Ridge." JUVENILE.

This is a modest, unpretending little volume, but it is full of wisdom and thoughtfulness. It does not discuss the peculiar doctrines of revelation, but applies itself to those fundamental views of morals and religion as to which the minds of so many peo- The Story of Father Miller, written for his Young ple are unsettled. Its clear method of statement, and its exactness in hitting the very point aimed at, admirably adapt it to fulfil the purpose of the author.

Jeremiah and his Lamentations; with Notes, Critical, Explanatory, and Practical, designed for both Pastors and People. By Rev. Henry Cowles, D. D. pp. xvii., 431. New York: D. Appleton & Co. The present volume concludes the author's series on the Old Testament prophecies. There is appended to it a special dissertation on the system of opinions or prophecy currently known as Premillenarianism. Notes on the writings of Solomon are in preparation, and will constitute Dr. Cowles' next work.

Works of Rev. Leonidas L. Hamline, D. D., late one of the Bishops of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Edited by Rev. F. G. Hibbard, D. D. pp. 432. Cincinnati: Hitchcock & Walden.

Dr. Hibbard is preparing for the press the religious, theological, and literary works of Bishop Hamline, and we have here the first volume of the series, together with a very graceful and appreciative introduction by the editor. There are twentythree sermons in the collection, all of them discussing important themes. The style of these discourses is thoughtful, impressive, and at times eloquent, without mere wordiness or rhetoric.

EDUCATIONAL.

Rudiments of the German Language. pp. 94. Ahn's New Practical and Easy Method of Learning the German Language: with pronunciation. By J. C. Oehlschlager, Revised Edition. pp. iv., 172; 73.

E. Steiger, the publisher of these, has issued a revised edition of them. Many typographical and

Friends.

By Franz Hoffman; translated by Lewis Henry Steiner. pp. iv., 176. Published by the Fund of the Trinity Sunday School of the Reformed Church, York, Pa., and received from the Reformed Church Publication Board, Philadelphia.

Ursula's Girlhood. pp. iv., 230.

From the American Baptist Publication Society, Philadelphia.

Annie's Gold Cross, and the Mysterious Motto. By the author of "Nellie Grey." pp. 267. From the Presbyterian Publication Committee, Philadelphia.

Mopsa, the Fairy. By Jean Ingelow. pp. 244. Boston: Roberts Brothers.

It is unnecessary to say aught in commendation of whatever in poetry or prose Miss Ingelow may write. She has here given full scope to her fancy, and has produced a story which will certainly delight the young folks. The volume contains several illustrations.

MISCELLANEOUS.

Game Fowls, their Original and History; with a Description of the Breeds, Strains, and Crosses. The American and English modes of Feeding, Training, and Healing. How to Breed and Cross, improving Quality and Preserving Feather, together with a Description and Treatment of all Diseases incident to Game Fowls. By J. W. Cooper, M.D. pp. 304. Philadelphia: Turner & Brother.

The title of Dr. Cooper's volume indicates very fully its contents. The doctor is an enthusiast on the subject, and has certainly brought together a great deal of curious information on his favorite topic.
