SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS.

THE POPULAR EDITION OF

FROUDE'S HISTORY OF ENGLAND From the Fall of Wolsey to the Death of Elizabeth.

In Twelve Volumes 12mo. $1 25 per volume.

Early in 1870 Messrs. CHARLES SCRIBNER & CO. will complete Froude's History of England by the republication of the Eleventh and Twelfth Volumes; and in view of the marked favor with which this great work has been received in its more expensive form, they have determined to reissue it at a price which shall secure it that extended sale to which its acknowledged merits so fully entitle it.

THE POPULAR EDITION

of FROUDE'S HISTORY OF ENGLAND will be printed upon white paper, and it will be substantially and attractively bound; while it will contain all the matter of the Library Edition, it will be sold at the very low price of $1 25 PER VOLUME, making the entire set of TWELVE VOLUMES cost, when completed, but FIFTEEN DOLLars.

VOLUMES I. and II. of THE POPULAR EDITION OF FROUDE'S HISTORY will be issued October 21, and Two Volumes will be brought out at monthly intervals until the work shall be completed.

CRITICAL

"The ease and spirit, the gentleness and force, the grace and energy, the descriptive and passionate power, the unstudied ease and the consummate art of both imagery and diction which distinguish this remarkable writer, will soon make a place for him among the most interesting and distinguished of those who have attempted to write any portion of the wonderful history of England. Those who have not read any of these volumes can scarcely appreciate, without the trial, how rich a treat is in store for them."-N. Y. Times.

NOTICES:

of character and events, can compare with the ten volumes of
Froude's History of England."-N. Y. Independent.
"The style is excellent; sound, honest, forcible, singularly
perspicuous English; at times with a sort of picturesque sim-
plicity, pictures dashed off with only a few touches, but perfectly
alive.
We have never to read a passage twice....
We see the course of events day by day, not only the more
serious and important communications, but the gossip of the
hour.....
If truth and vivid reality be the perfection of
history, much is to be said in favor of this mode of composi
tion."-London Quarterly.

"Since Macaulay's first volume, no historical work has appeared which, in brilliance of style as well as in keen analysis **Those desiring to purchase the Popular Edition of to their address, as soon as issued, by sending $15 to the publishers.

HOUSEHOLD LIBRARY OF MODERN FICTION.

UNIFORM, COMPACT, LEGIBLE, HANDSOME, CHEAP.

GEORGE ELIOT'S NOVELS.

This Household Edition is published under special arrangement with the author, as shown by the following letter:

TO MESSES. FIELDS, OSGOOD & Co.:

DEAR SIRS: Your intimation that my friends in America would welcome a new uniform edition of my novels with the latest corrections, is very gratifying to me. Some of the most intelligent and generous sympathy I have received has come to me from your side of the Atlantic, and has given me a belief in my public there which is a precious source of encouragement. I have also good reasons, not probably peculiar to myself among the English authors whose works you have reproduced, for especially wishing my books to appear under the auspices of your firm; and I therefore gladly authorize you to publish the proposed edition, leaving the form and price to your more experienced judgment. I remain, dear sir, yours faithfully,

LONDON, May 20, 1869.

This edition of George Eliot's Novels is complete in five volumes, as follows:-
Adam Bede,
The Mill on the Floss,
Romola,
Felix Holt,

GEORGE ELIOT.

Silas Marner, and

Scenes of Clerical Life.

Cloth, $1 each; Half Calf, $2 25.

MISS THACKERAY'S WRITINGS.

For the first time the writings of this popular author will be collected in a uniform edition in the Household style. This edition will include "The Story of Elizabeth," "The Village on the Cliff," "Five Old Friends," From an Island," and various other stories and miscellanies from different English periodicals. The edition is published with the author's sanction, and under the authority of the accompanying letter.

MESSRS. FIELDS, OSGOOD & Co.:

LONDON, 16 Onslow Gardens, May 27, 1869.

It is my wish that your firm should republish my stories in a collected edition to which the writer is glad to give her authorization. This is not the first time that I have to thank you for thinking of our interests in America. Believe me, yours very truly, ANNE ISABELLA THACKERAY.

Miss Thackeray's Writings will be included in two volumes, 16mo. Cloth, $1 each; Half Calf, $2 25.

THACKERAY'S MISCELLANIES.

The signal success attending the Household Edition of Thackeray's Novels, has induced Messrs. Fields, Osgood & Co. to add to the series his numerous miscellaneous writings; thus bringing together for the first time the complete works of Thackeray in an inexpensive, handsome, and uniform edition. The volumes are reprinted from the last English edition, which embraces numerous choice papers never before collected. Other matter not included in the English edition will be added. It is the intention of the present publishers to include in their Household Edition the complete writings of the author so far as they are known.

Thackeray's Miscellanies will probably be contained in five volumes.
