M OLIERE n'oppofa pendant long-tems que les représentations toujours fuivies de L'Ecole des Femmes, aux critiques que l'on en faifoit, & ne fongea à les détruire, du moins en partie, qu'au mois de juin 1663, qu'il donna au public fa comé die intitulée la Critique de l'Ecole des Femmes. Le fonds en devoit être une differtation, & n'admettoit par conféquent ni intrigue ni dénouement; mais Moliere ne s'écarte jamais de l'objet que doit avoir un auteur comique, quelque genre qu'il mette fur la fcéne. Il fçut, par le tableau de ce qui fe paffa dans les cercles de Paris, tandis que Ecole des Femmes en faifoit l'entretien, tracer une image fidéle d'une des parties de la vie civile, en copiant le langage & le caractére des conversations ordinaires des perfonnes The SCHOOL for WIVES CRITICIS'D, a Comedy of One Act in Profe, acted at the Theatre of the Palace-Royal the 1st of June 1663. M OLIERE for a long time made no other oppofition to the Criticifms which were publish'd upon the School for Wives, than the continu'd Representations of the Piece it felf, which were always crowded, nor was at any Pains to fupprefs them, in part at leaft, 'till the Month of June 1663, when he brought out his Comedy call'd the School for Wives Criticis'd. The Subject feem'd only proper for a Differtation, and consequently admitted of neither Intrigue nor Cataftrophe: But Moliere never loft Sight of the Object which a Comick Writer ought always to have in view in whatever kind of Performances hę brings on the Stage: He knew, from what had pass'd in the Circles of Paris whilft the School for Wives was talk'd of, to draw a faithful Image of one part of Civil Life by copying the Language and Character of the common Converfations of the People of Fa |
